I know this SSD gets posted quite often, but for those unfamiliar with the drive here are the highlights:

1) One of the top 2.5" SSDs (probably barely 3rd behind 860 and 870 Evo)
2) Has DRAM
3) 5 year warranty
4) Primarily for older systems that cannot use NVMe or M.2
5) Fakes on Amazon? Maybe, but I've never met anyone who actually received a fake. Neither have I received one from my 3 purchases. You can always check with Crystal Disk Benchmark to verify it has the correct speeds.
probably alone on this one... but imo, this isn't a good price.. yeah it's a solid brand and model, but the 1TB should be at this price or around the $50ish mark. imo the 500GB should be around $30-35.
saying this is a good price is like saying the 2TB at $170 is a good price.. i dunno.

waiting for the 2TB to drop to $112 again... now that's actually a deal

You could buy a gen4 nvme for the same price:

true but this deal is helpful for those who cannot host the faster nvme's and just need a good ssd

I was going to buy this and then decided on the 1TB BX500, it's $61 right now as well on amazon. FYI
But it's less quality though.

Would this be a good pickup this close to BF? I'll probably wait to get a 1gb SSD under $80, but wanted to know how good of a deal this really is.

Can you show a link or Data point to show it has DRAM? all my search shows it has no DRAM

I don't know where you're looking but it's widely known that the MX500 has DRAM (the BX500 does not). All variants of the MX500 have DRAM, though the 4TB version has less than it should.

While it may not be a huge deal, be aware that the 4TB model has some downgrades, compared to the smaller variants. Most notably, the DRAM:NAND ratio is only 1/8th that of the smaller models. It has only 512MB, compared to the 4GB that it should have. There is also some additional latency because the drive has more NAND than the controller is designed to handle. That's not to say it's a bad drive, just very different from the other MX500s.

Technically, the hardware has already changed a couple times but not in a bad way. The original variant used the SMI SM2258 controller. It was later swapped for the SM2259 (which is almost identical but supports newer NAND). All variants use Micron 3D TLC but it has gone from 64 layer, to 96 layer, to 176 layer. The warranted endurance numbers have not changed since the drive was originally released. Crucial seems to be quite conservative with their endurance ratings.

You may regret that. The BX500 is a notoriously problematic drive. It's the only SSD I've ever had issues with and I'm not alone.

How did you determine the one from Amazon was fake? All the ones I've bought from Amazon have been genuine (not that there couldn't be fakes).

I bought a replacement that same day at Central Computers. It was pretty obvious when they were side by side. The stickers were the wrong color and it didn't have the extra casing parts the one I bought in store had.

It does sound like you may have gotten a fake. I believe I've encountered all 3 revisions of the MX500 (spanning ~4 years) and the exterior casing and stickers have all been identical. However, the internal components are quite different. The original version had a much larger PCB, with more NAND packages. Later revisions have a smaller PCB, with fewer NAND packages and a newer controller. I've seen some people claim drives were "fake" just because they opened it up and found a small PCB. That is not necessarily indicative of whether or not a drive is genuine. What components are on the PCB is more significant. Also, the MX500 is unusual in that it can be opened without breaking any seals or clips. The metal casing is held together with 4 small screws.
