Seems like the price is right. Lack of reviews and a few I did see didn't look good, motion was unreliable (not sure if reviewer had set it up correctly) and laser strength was weakening quickly (maybe replaceable under warranty?) I'm still considering it for the price.

I'd really love to see these strong enough for actually engraving metal.

A diode laser is extremely far from that. Best you will manage is cutting into finishes or marking into marking spray.

You'll need a fiber laser to engrave metal, which is generally several thousand for a fairly basic one. If your needs are low you can purchase an inexpensive smaller desktop cnc and a diamond drag bit instead.

Any idea where to get the plates to engrave on? I'd love to make my own guitar amp faceplates for my custom amp head builds.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I just want to give people a heads up, kits like this can be very dangerous, these lasers are no joke, and cutting or engraving certain items can release deadly poisonous gases. Makers Muse [youtu.be] on youtube has just done a series talking about these cheap engraving kits and some of the risks involved and I highly recommend checking them out.

Thank you. Seems like there's very few things you could etch that don't generate some emissive dust/fumes you'll breathe.

These also don't have any laser light shielding other than some glasses. Someone randomly walking up to take a look at what you are engraving could be permanently blinded. Use extreme caution.

Echoing warnings earlier in the thread - I've used quite a few lasers, laser cutters, and assorted dangerous bits and bobs.

Retinas are not yet replaceable, the time to permanent damage is milliseconds, and you only get two chances. You cannot rely on "safety squints," and you cannot blink fast enough to save your sight. A stray reflection can change your life.

Consider a simple enclosure plus strictly enforced safety rules like you'd use with any table saw or lathe. Eg, never look while it's working. Never rely on a safe state alone, eg "I turned the laser off, so it's okay to tinker with it while powered on."

Also, separately - there are a few reasons why laser power might drop off sharply. One might be drifting out of focus, or smoke/vapor deposits on lens. But I've also seen cheap manufacturers way overpower a cheap diode to claim output levels in excess of component spec, and a symptom of that is a drastically shortened lifespan.
