You'll need a fiber laser to engrave metal, which is generally several thousand for a fairly basic one. If your needs are low you can purchase an inexpensive smaller desktop cnc and a diamond drag bit instead.

Nvm!! The materials item wouldn't add to cart. Thanks

Retinas are not yet replaceable, the time to permanent damage is milliseconds, and you only get two chances. You cannot rely on "safety squints," and you cannot blink fast enough to save your sight. A stray reflection can change your life.
Consider a simple enclosure plus strictly enforced safety rules like you'd use with any table saw or lathe. Eg, never look while it's working. Never rely on a safe state alone, eg "I turned the laser off, so it's okay to tinker with it while powered on."
Also, separately - there are a few reasons why laser power might drop off sharply. One might be drifting out of focus, or smoke/vapor deposits on lens. But I've also seen cheap manufacturers way overpower a cheap diode to claim output levels in excess of component spec, and a symptom of that is a drastically shortened lifespan.

I meant to be melodramatic, but not THAT dramatic.
I MEANT to say:
"You'd only SEE an open frame metal engraver once... 😳😎"
LOL...!
