I wouldn't go so far to say it was "crap" but it wasn't any where near as good as people pretend it was. It was all shock factor for the sake of shock factor....with classical music in the background.

It was a huge hit when it was released. Made almost $300 million at the USA theaters in today's dollars and was nominated for best picture at the Oscars and won numerous critics awards. It was a big critical and commercial success (of course with controversy). And was originally rated X.

Right. Just saying had been released today it would have also been an award winning blockbuster. Maybe even more so. Great film.

It's really a snapshot in time reflecting the sentiment of the intellectual class in its day, especially in Europe. A lot of its critique isn't as applicable to today's society.
