Serious question, what do you all think the difference is between a "Publix" turkey and a butterball?

Nothing … most turkey plants are owned by very few companies with production that goes year around.

Another point, by selling $.49 for whole turkey, Publix is hoping that you will spend for your entire meal in Publix, especially wine and condiments, which have higher margin. Thus, turkey is a loss leader for Publix to get your foot in their door!

Wegmans has frozen turkeys for 29 cents/lb., and Giant Food (Landover) has them for 37 cents/lb. Both say you must make an additional $25 purchase to get that price. I'm not sure if Giant actually enforces that, though.

Difference between Publix Turkey and Butterball is the Publix does not have injected "butter" in the bird. I've used Publix Turkeys for years and won't use anything else.
