So the flip6 and power bank were delivered. I was able to mark the powerbank for return and it says I will receive $23.82 back. This effectively makes the Flip6 $67.16 (or $71.53 with tax). Essentially this becomes cheaper than the flip5, and it's upgraded and dust resistant. Thanks OP!

Looks like they assigned $22.47 to the power bank and only $67.48 to the speaker. Going to buy the bundle and try to return the power bank and see if it refunds the $22.47. thanks for the post OP. Much better deal if this works than the flip 5 on front page. The flip 6 is significantly better and cheaper using this method, if it works. It is getting delivered tonight and I'll update when I find out.

This speaker is MONO [youtube.com]! Why on earth is this acceptable.
Because most people don't care about stereo on a speaker this size.

Yeah, you really want to make sure you prioritize that stereo convergence area produced by two speakers a few inches apart. /s

The vast majority of battery-powered speakers are mono because 1) it takes roughly half the power to move one driver compared to two and 2) the sound difference is negligible (if it even exists). Multi-channel audio is only cool because it allows musicians/filmmakers/etc. to use the distance between channels to do neat things. Having two identical speakers on something like this doesn't accomplish that because there isn't enough distance between then. If you care about sound quality, you should actually be hyped about this one because it has a separate tweeter instead of sending everything out from one cone.

As for the general thread: I picked one of these up for $78 with the remains of the ongoing Citi 30% off Amazon promo, and I dig it. Externals are very similar to the 5 (if it ain't broke, don't fix it), and I do think the tweeter makes "real" highs (synth noises, cymbals, piano, etc.) come out noticeably cleaner. Being able to adjust the very basic EQ in the JBL Mobile app is kind of nice without making a huge difference.

If you care about savings, I'd say pick up a 5 since it has USB-C and very good battery life with only slightly downgraded audio. But if you don't mind paying the extra, I'd pick this up in the $70-80 range.

I got the Flip 6 effectively for $30!!! (+tax & once I return the power bank for $23)

-$10 off for adding Venmo Pmt Option to Amazon (search SD!)
-$27 off for paying with Discover (30%off promo w/Discover pts, also linked thru SD!)
-$23 for returning powerbank
I just followed all of these same steps, but the return value of the powerbank is closer to $10 with all the other discounts applied. Still a great deal to get a Flip 6 for ~$45.

Maybe different because of proximity but I can tell the difference between stereo and mono on the speakers in my phone, which has even less separation space than a typical bluetooth speaker.

I had bought this small bluetooth speaker for a friend online. Don't remember but it was a name brand. It was like the size of 4 external 2.5hdds. The sound was amazing and shocking loud for the size.

The UE boom was a huge disappointment. Of course I could be wrong about the audio qualify -it might not be related to stereo/mono. And I'm by no means an audiophile. I just haven't found any bluetooth speakers that come close to the one I gifted.

I just assumed, given the size, that these were stereo. And having watched that teardown I was surprised it was mono.

Amazingly, some folks will bitch when a speaker that fits in their hand does not sound like movie theatre surround sound and rattle the very ground they sit on...

I have one of these already. And for what it is, I like it.

Just bought this deal as well to see how well the PartyBoost function works. Since some have commented about this being a mono speaker, the sound is great for its size, but adding another speaker for stereo sound will be interesting.

My price is coming out to 67.48 for the speaker and 22.47 for the battery (which I will be returning)

If a device like a phone has two speakers and only one is being used for some reason, that will definitely sound worse because it's essentially working at half power. And yes, proximity matters: if your speakers are at the ends of your phone and you're holding it 18 inches from your face, you will get some effects if the signal and phone are actually outputting stereo (some will just use a mono signal and output the same from both speakers since orientation will vary).

But you're talking about the worst-case scenario from an overall sound quality perspective. Phone speakers are so tiny that their frequency output range is terrible compared to even mediocre BT speakers, much less good headphones.

And my original point stands: for BT speakers like this whose listeners will likely be at least several feet away, there is zero benefit to stereo over mono from a sound experience perspective, but there are costs (extra power for the second driver). Now if you're sitting 12ft away from the front of a stereo/surround setup whose floorstanders are 8ft apart, now we're talking.

I also have to wonder if the phone is using DSP to make it sound "better".
