For those who don't follow Lego deals closely, this set has gone on sale for 3 years straight now (previous 2 years at $30) but it's one of the best price per brick sets available at $25 for 1,500 pieces. Really good bulk Lego box to start a new Lego collection or bolster the part count of an existing one.
SDers... There are a lot of people struggling out there right now.

I'm blessed to be in a good position. If you are, please consider picking up a couple of these for donation.

It's not a lot of money and a ton of bricks. If a kid is only going to get one or two presents because their family can't afford them, this is a lot of bang for your donation buck.

Also consider when you see jackets, hats/gloves, and other things.

As Pete the cat says... It's the giving-est time of the year.
For the average person, I'd say there is no difference. Technically, if you want to dive into the details, there are a ton of very tiny differences in part and color variations. But the vast majority of the types of parts you're getting is the same and the weight of both sets only differs by 1oz so the size of the parts in total is almost identical as well so it isn't like one set comes with a bunch of big parts and the other is mostly smaller parts.

You can see what exact pieces you get in the links above but sifting through the differences will be tedious and not bring to light anything really interesting. Biggest difference I spotted after a minute that might mean anything to an average person is that 10717 comes with some wheels and the other doesn't. Nothing major to write home about.

Your math needs some work, it's 1.7 cents per brick, not 17 cents. But a good deal none the less.

Is this a pretty good starter set for a kid's first foray into LEGO? For the younger kids, I don't care for the sets with licensed character but instead opt for the basic stuff to encourage creativity
Depends on the kid's age. My son turned 5 this year and I think he's starting to get comfortable with the classic Lego sizes. Before 5 I would recommend Lego Duplo all the way.

Local Walmarts (Chicago burbs) have had these in store. Picked up two today and there were a few left (Aurora IL)
