I never have used them. What are the advantages/disadvantages?

My first guess would be they slide on bar poorly, but it appears no rubber near the center.

Lol Wut? Every powerlifter on the planet uses bumpers EXCLUSIVELY, except in competition when calibrated metal plates are sometimes used. Deadlift, clean and jerk, snatch, overhead squat. .. . . I mean the list goes on and on and on.
