nVidia has been milking this too long I think. Once they updated this to Android 11 it lost a bunch of performance. This is, and was, measurable. Other Shield owners can downvote me as they always do, but I'm not making it up.

Just some more information from AFTVNews where they show the new Fire Cube is even showing higher performance than the Shield Pro.

Yeah, the shield might still be the best streaming media player, but it's too expensive at this point. It's time to either release one with new hardware or lower the price.

From the standpoint of a Plex client, it's pretty much the only game in town that can do 4k with Dolby TrueHD audio. This is important for those that have high quality Blu-Ray rips on their local servers and they want to get the most out of those rips.

There are other things, but that's the only thing I really cared about when I was looking into getting it. Note that I never bought one, so I can't speak from personal experience.

What are the big advantages of one of these vs just using a firestick to stream for cheaper?

AI Upscaling to improve the picture. Overall it's just a way more powerful machine. You can do gaming and emulation on it as well. I have 2 Shields and a Firestick. I'll be jumping on this deal to replace that Firestick.

I started using Plex this week on my xbox. My xbox can output dolby truehd, atmos, etc and it sounds incredible. However, I can't for the life of me get dolby vision to work on my xbox from plex.
So i'm gonna likely buy this shield when the deal starts. Cause right now I gotta choose between dolby atmos on my xbox, or getting dolby vision from my apple tv 4k. and it sucks

It goes live on November 21, 2022.

You will not be able to replicate the deal until then.

So ppl set up a plex server to rip their Blu rays and store them and then run it through their shield? I'm kinda new to this.

I had nothing but problems with my Series X and streaming via the Plex app. That was a while ago though, so maybe it got better. I now use my CCWGTV for streaming. Uses way less power than the Xbox too.

However, I would not put a Series X in the same category as a streamer like the Shield Pro. Xbox is game first, streamer second.

I may go with this Shield Pro when the deal goes live... However, that may depend on if I get a TV capable of Dolby Vision / HDR10 /etc.

I do agree with others that the Shield Pro is just too expensive now... However, it's great - IF what it can do is important to you (that others can't).

Yes, create a local server and rip Blu-Rays to it, install Plex (or similar) and stream that to whatever your client device is.

I've had Plex for years and very much like it. Some people prefer other types of servers.

You don't have to use the Shield Pro as a client. CCWGTV (chromecast), Roku, Google TV OS, Apple TV, Series X/PS5 all have a Plex client they can use (many TV OS's do as well). Where it gets more complicated is what formats for video and audio are important to you (Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master, Dolby Atmos, etc.).

Interesting. I own three of these and two non-pros, all up to date and several used daily for streaming / emby. I haven't noticed any impact to performance whatsoever over the many years i've owned them.

Wish I had the same experience, but I've noticed significant drops in performance on mine. I wish I hadn't, I prefer it over the other options.

Performance CPU wise the cube might win but GPU wise nothing comes close to the shield. I agree NVidia has been milking the shield but it's still the most powerful andorid box out there.

I mean its still the best streaming media box available. At least they don't intentionally slow down the firestick to bring out slightly better versions every year. I still have the 2017 can do everything that I need it to plus pc game on it. I dont mind when companies dont drop new products every year just because.

Absolutely, it's just not worth the full MSRP anymore and should be going a bit lower on sales by now. This would be a great purchase at $125, but at $175? I just don't know, especially with the AppleTV out there at $99 for the 2021 version and the new version coming in at $125? The only downside there is that the AppleTV cannot switch inputs on a TV like all of the other streaming devices on the market... for whatever reason Apple doesn't think anyone would like that.

I do think it handles Moonlight and PSPlay well., but I honestly don't see much of a difference in performance with those from the previous gen Fire Cube when using an ethernet adapter that allows 300+ Mbps. But the interface is much better than the FireTV for sure. I do wish they'd upgrade to GoogleTV interface from AndroidTV so that the extra features were there and not JUST the ads.
