Few things to keep in mind, is that you can't use remaining ink in the tank if you stop paying, another is that you can't opt out of subscription after a year if you just want to buy the ink outright. You can stop paying but then the whole thing will stop working.
The printer needs to be connected to internet for it to work, no offline printing and no 3rd party cartridges, ever. If one month you go over, you'll be charged a overage fees.
Since it's a subscription they could raise the price like Netflix and you may not have a choice to "opt out". They have raised the price in the past, they used to have an even cheaper subscription that they got rid of.

I sometimes have to print specific stuff for my kid's schoolwork and sometimes color is required there.
edit: also i don't want to send n00ds to walmart or walgreens or cvs or shutterfly etc.

This deal seems better for me because I get a new printer (mine is old, scanner no longer works) and 9 months of ink. After 9 mo, $3.99 for 50 pages per month costs $48 dollars. Which is still cheaper than using my old HP AIO.
I need color printing for my kids. Am I missing something?
I jumped on a printer slickdeal a couple of years back because I needed a printer, and didn't pay attention to the specs or anything, just that it was nicely priced.
Then the monster arrived. Its one of those that also prints pictures and is ginormous. I've been hating the thing ever since and been thinking of letting the thing go, as I can't stand to see the thing occupying so much space anymore.
Can someone recommend a cheap small footprint printer with no bells and whistles?

I like it for printing photos and spreadsheets on A3 papers but it's not cost effective for printing regular documents. Aftermarket inks such as Precision Colors are cheaper, but they are still overkill for printing regular documents.

Toner doesn't dry out because it's a powder to begin with. I'm still using the same toner cartridge that came with my printer purchased in 2001.
