That's it.
Few things to keep in mind, is that you can't use remaining ink in the tank if you stop paying, another is that you can't opt out of subscription after a year if you just want to buy the ink outright. You can stop paying but then the whole thing will stop working.
The printer needs to be connected to internet for it to work, no offline printing and no 3rd party cartridges, ever. If one month you go over, you'll be charged a overage fees.
Since it's a subscription they could raise the price like Netflix and you may not have a choice to "opt out". They have raised the price in the past, they used to have an even cheaper subscription that they got rid of.
Epson and Canon are trying to join the ranks. One of them won't scan without ink.
yes 2018 black friday! manufacturers are making up fake shortages and supply issues to gouge the public.

as much as i'd like to jump on the color laser aio train, i haven't seen one other than refurbs come in under the $200 mark, let alone under $50. also who says you can't have both? Wink
What do you actually use the color for? If it's photos, just get them printed at Walmart and they'll be far better quality.

I sometimes have to print specific stuff for my kid's schoolwork and sometimes color is required there.

Oooooft, that sucks. I got so frustrated with ink drying out, needing replacing, etc that I switched to laser and never went back. But then I don't have to print color documents.

Does laser doesn't print color? And is that costly?

I just searched my email, mine was 2017 BF, $19 with free plan 15 pages per month, but right now it's broken, I have to get another one : (
The current deal is up to 700 pages per month so it makes sense to cost more. It's a great deal for those who print a lot.

There's a black print-only (most people go for this) laser printer which is a lot cheaper than a color laser printer. I was looking into a color printer that also can copy & scan on a flatbed and the lowest I could find is $330 at Sams club by Brother. I hope I can get it cheaper on Blk Friday.

printing on optical media, primarily, which afaik no laser printer does..buuut also occasionally photos as well; i'm using a canon ts8220 though, with generic inks hahah

edit: also i don't want to send n00ds to walmart or walgreens or cvs or shutterfly etc. Wink but yes i too tire of drying out inks and cleaning heads and all that mess, my trusty old epson artisan 837 finally gave up the ghost a year or so ago, but it served me well with its dirt-cheap generic inks (about $1 a cart, which i could then trade in at staples or office depot for $2 hah)

I have an entry model of HP all-in-one that I replace inks twice a year. Each cost about $20-35.

This deal seems better for me because I get a new printer (mine is old, scanner no longer works) and 9 months of ink. After 9 mo, $3.99 for 50 pages per month costs $48 dollars. Which is still cheaper than using my old HP AIO.

I need color printing for my kids. Am I missing something?

Printer deals give me PTSD.
I jumped on a printer slickdeal a couple of years back because I needed a printer, and didn't pay attention to the specs or anything, just that it was nicely priced.
Then the monster arrived. Its one of those that also prints pictures and is ginormous. I've been hating the thing ever since and been thinking of letting the thing go, as I can't stand to see the thing occupying so much space anymore.

Can someone recommend a cheap small footprint printer with no bells and whistles?

Is it the Canon Pro-100? 😂
I like it for printing photos and spreadsheets on A3 papers but it's not cost effective for printing regular documents. Aftermarket inks such as Precision Colors are cheaper, but they are still overkill for printing regular documents.

I'm okay with it since it's exactly what I wanted - a printer for printing larger formats. 😂 But it's also a great idea to get a crappy one like this entry level HP for regular use. The included 9-month Instant Ink alone is worth it.

if you do any significant amount of document printing, or you have a business.. investing in a basic Laser/Toner printer is well worth the up-front cost.

Toner doesn't dry out because it's a powder to begin with. I'm still using the same toner cartridge that came with my printer purchased in 2001.
