YEsterday I ordered last year's Legion Pro with 5800H, DDR4, PCIe 3.0 SSD and 3070 for $1269. I don't think the 10 year old who is getting it will need the 3070. I may get the newer one with the better specs except for the 3060 instead. Easy returns with Walmart. There's one down the street from me. Thoughts?

My girlfriend's kid! We all live together and until two years ago at age 51 I had never lived with anyone except one roommate for a year. Hence, it's been hell adjusting and I drive her and him crazy cause of all the normal 'chaos" I can't handle lol. He deserves it and will enjoy moving away from integrated graphics of my LG Gram, though he may not be thrilled about the heft. Nah, he's going to be soooooo happy.

I am considering the Asus Strix with the 6800m though too. Kind of a tough decision. .

Got mine from the exchange website for military personnel. The CPU is 11th Gen core i7, not the 12th generation and DDR4 Ram. Upgraded the ram to 32gb and added a 2nd m2 drive. No problems with it so far.

Lenovo makes outstanding laptops. If you can get the deal, it's a rock solid. Besides, if ever need to call Lenovo for support, unlike Dell, Lenovo support team knows how to fix issues
can you share the exchange website? i have a brother in the military

I've got a 12 year old who is getting spoiled this year. Currently have the Acer Helios (3060) and Asus Strix (6800) and now I've got the Legion coming. Obviously 2 are going back and if the 3070 version gets low enough that's the prize.
Here's my thinking-
Asus - 6800m is no good at Ray Tracing and my kid likes Minecraft still which is now cool with RTX. Don't want to change out Strix RAM and would prefer gen 4 nvme. Also issues may exist with cooling and I'm not interested in that potential.
Acer - close second. Would prefer the nicer screen on the Legion.
Legion - from Walmart, cheaper extended warranty. Specs are impressive. A few fps loss is a bummer, but nicer screen for less gaming focused things I hope he uses the computer. Also, build quality and Lenovo reputation seem like a plus.

RTX 3060 is not a 165hz 1440p GPU just an FYI. You will be turning the settings way down on a lot of games at that resolution or at least needing to run DLSS.

Do not buy a gaming heavy laptop that is crippled with a 3060. It barely runs anything

The 3060 is fine, it's the pairing with the QHD screen that makes it a problem.

When you compare this to the Slim 7i, the former takes a 20fps hit simply because of the resolution (even though the TDP is 40w higher).

If you are not a hardcore gamer this machine will still get over 30fps in Cyberpunk High with DLSS and the QHD screen is one of the best going around in a gaming laptop.

One last thing, if you want to game on the go (e.g. on a plane with power limits) my experience is that you need to lower settings to reduce power draw. The QHD resolution will make it harder to turn down settings / reduce power consumption. I know this is an edge case for most people but thought I'd mention it.
