I got this at Costco for $20 more instead. I figured it's worth it because of the free shipping, extra 2% back as an executive member, 90 day return window, and free 2nd year warranty.

This is the same price of 780/800 for 2 year old computer

If it's not 750 or lower it's not really a deal

We Got it for 750 year ago from micro center

So I've been against apple's proprietary crap, but but now need to have video editing capabilities beyond my android or PC... (think John Holmes... jk)... I love costco and could simply purchase this, but can I get away w/ a macbook pro 16gb 1TB HD i5 for half the price and get what I'm looking for w/ iMovie capabilities and maybe running davinchi?

Still an incredible bargain for the price. If you take the same money and tried to buy a used MacBook, you won't get near the speed and stability.
ngl this is kinda dumb. by that logic, wouldn't using your MacBook lower the speed and stability? why even bother buying new

incredible

Best entry level laptop out there if you're open to MacOS.
It's a great deal, but having had an identical one since release, I really wish I'd gotten one with more RAM. It's, natch, not upgradeable.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Don't run many apps at once? This is great. Battery life is wonderful.

Is there any reason to pick this over the M1 13.3" MBP (Model MYD92LL/A)?

I bought MBA 1 yr back from Costco for $800. I preferred it because of it's fan-less light weight design. I can let it sit on my bed without having to worry about overheating.
Additionally, I was not going to be doing any graphic intensive tasks like editing videos so MBA works great for me.

2+ year old laptop model and with m2 models already out, isn't this got a 1+ year old, non-user replaceable battery? Ie. Old stock sitting around.

Smart to have extended warranty - Macs in general are painfully expensive to fix without.

Notebookcheck.net has the reviews of most M1/M2 models for comparison.

That said, price is still so high that it doesn't even motivate a thread unless you add the Microcenter credit card discount.

Even the oldest computers can still edit video, it just depends on how patient you are waiting for the rendering to take place. The new M1 / M2 Macs are significantly faster than the old Intel Macs, while being nearly silent and far better on battery.

That said, if you just want a cheap Mac to play around with, an old i5 Macbook would be perfectly fine for basic use.

Sometimes I think everyone believes they need the latest Mac to do any video editing; that's not the case. Professional studios used horsepower significantly less than even the simplest i5 Macbook laptops if you go far back enough in time, and they managed just fine.

That said, I like my MBP14", and at $1599, I recommend it to any who ask.

You'd be better off getting a newer M1 or M2 macbook. for a few reasons IMHO

1. performance, it will allow you to edit videos and add effects a lot faster, almost instantaneously (watch a few youtube videos for yourself)

2. battery life and fan noise/heat. Intel macbooks don't last very long for battery life and overheat/throttle limiting/slowing down performance.

3. support/features. Apple has been recently cutting off support for older intel machines with their OS updates and the older the machine, the less support + new features you will lose in the near future.

Watch a few youtube videos comparing the M1 vs intel and read a few articles online about them.

You'll thank me later.

The m1 processors are more efficient and they don't give off as much heat with better battery life. I have an M1 Pro and it's crazy I can watch Netflix for 12 hours before it shuts down. I5 doesn't come close but if your getting a deal go ahead
