You didn't hear it from me, I put a 'toolbox' on my 'fire' tab 10 and it's good to go.
It's not a monthly fee. You just buy the model WITHOUT LOCK SCREEN ADS. Right now it's $15 more on Amazon.
Not that it helps you but for anyone else seeing this post, most will get the instant 20% off and the trade-in gift card value that you can apply instantly to the purchase of a new Fire tablet. I initiated an HD 8 trade in yesterday and I bought the HD 10 delivered this morning with the 20% off and the trade-in $25 gift card value. For anyone with a 2020 HD 8 who feels the performance is a bit janky, the regular HD 10 is approaching night and day better.

I've never had a tablet, and am looking to get one; mainly for office productivity.
Reading pdf, email, basic browsing. No games. Access to linux a big plus.
I'm only seeing the HD10+ 32GB and 64GB as shippable on Kohls.
Normally I would not buy but I have $20 Kohl cash.
Is the HD10+ 64GB for $125 or the 32GB for $85 worth it for my needs?
Are there better tablets for my use pattern?

No, these are underpowered for office productivity. You can try Samsung Tab S, or an iPad Air or even iPad Pro with magic keyboard ($$$) but neither gives you real access to linux. You may be better off with a chromebook with a touch screen and fold back keyboard to use as a tablet or a Microsoft Surface Pro and install a linux distro with WSL.

Why do these things still have only 2g ram? Manufacturers need to get it together. Useless.

OK...upgraded to the Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Plus.

Used latest version of Fire Toolbox on the Fire HD 10 and installed GOogle Play etc and all the other usual modifications.

Anyone else running into issues with ROBLOX freezing up on it?? I gave this to my kiddo as a replacement for an aging Asus Zenpad Z10 but its been locking up recently with Roblox. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the problem returns.

I have been debating if its just better to get him a Samsung Galaxy Tab that has Android 10 or beyond....Its too bad no one has been able to jailbreak the Zenpad Z10....that tablet is rock solid still.

That would be like a super computer compared to a fire tablet, but keep in mind a 2-in-1 laptop isn't going to be light or slim in the hand like a tablet. But it will be excellent for Linux commands since it actually has a keyboard.

There's also a smaller 10" or 11" 2-in-1 Chromebook slickdeal going on for $79. Has half the ram and a Celeron 4020, but still way better specs than a fire tablet. It's more compact than what you linked to. Not as much cpu but still very usable at less than half the price.

It's cheaper to buy a refurb fire tablet... I think I got the fire hd 10 (2021) for $65. It's a decent tablet once you sideload the Google play store. But honestly if I paid $100 for this thing I would've returned it. You can't use USB hubs or otg dongles with it. It bugs you about setting up your micro SD card every time. There is no fingerprint scanner or face unlock so you have to type your pin in trying to avoid tapping the ad all the time. You can no longer use your own launcher so you're stuck with Amazon's sucky ad loaded home screen. There is no navigation gestures, it uses the 3 soft touch buttons on the bottom of the screen similar to Android 7. Speakers are loud enough but the quality isn't great. Screen looks decent and battery holds a charge for a long time without draining.

I have one of the previous generation Fire 10's from 2019. I mention that because it runs some of the game apps I use like Bingo Blitz just fine. I wouldn't expect to be able to play actual video games on it though.

Your comment should be a sticky for these tablets.

Best description is when you mentioned the Kindle. Those were made for just reading text from ebooks so the specs were very minimal.

These are basically upgraded kindles, with color screens and better hardware, but still minimal. Your list is perfect perfect because it provides a great idea of the limitations.

I'm buying an HD 8 Plus to use for two purposes:
  1. entertainment tool for toddler (2 years old). Buying the kids proof case of course
  2. Use as a dedicated baby monitor to carry around the house (will need to tweak it to bypass lockscreen from inactivity)

Any owners of Fire HD tablets have feedback on my intended use? I keep seeing comments on it running very slow, but not sure if that matters for me.

It's perfectly fine for your intended use, which is mainly as a display with very little interaction.

According to reviews, the lock screen displays ads constantly, and the only way to remove them is to pay a monthly fee. From reviews, it seems like that is the norm on these Amazon tablets. That's right, is it?

The lock screen shows them when idle and when you first turn it on. They swipe away easily.

Spend the extra $15 and get the version without the ads. It's worth it IMO. Especially if you were planning to get one for a child.
