Idk where we're at with fire tools applicability on these new ones. Can anyone summarize with respect to: lock screen ad removal, play store installation, launcher change?

I can help, as I just bought the 32 GB version, and set it up using the latest version of the Fire Toolbox. The toolbox is available from XDA Developers and the latest version is 29. It's use is nicely outlined by the site Lilliputing. This site points out one caution: that the user not allow the tablet to automatically update the Fire operating system, because if that happens, then some of the fine features offered by the Toolbox won't work. IMO, this tablet, when setup with the Fire Toolbox, is a great value and performer. And yes, the Fire Toolbox can remove lock screen ads, allows Play Store installation, and allows launcher changing (all of which I did).

They did not if you update the firmware. Make sure not to link your Amazon account when purchasing and do not connect to wifi when turning it on. Run fire toolbox first.

Ok so there's still the issue of checking for firmware compatibility with fire tools then. Thanks

If you want to use the play store, this is not a good tablet. I had this one and used the fire tool to have google services, it constantly crashes and some app does not support it. I hard time login in Google account.

Looking to buy a cheap android (like Lenovo) instead of this one.

If you want to use Amazon-provided services then this good cheap tablet.

Yes, they are pretty fast, have a recent Android OS and a good display. It is pretty useless out of the box because it does not have Google Play and thus cannot install popular Android apps. You can fix this in 30 mins by installing Google Play. Search for "play on amazon fire tablet" and follow instructions from AndroidPolice or HowToGeek. Now you can enjoy a real Android tablet.

Also, if you trade in an old tablet, you can get a 20% discount on this device, plus $10-20 for the trade-in. Good deal. If the 7" goes on sale for $49, it would be a great deal after 20% and rebate.

Fire Tools is fine but may not be recommended for novices. Take your time to think and follow the instructions.
