You'll get charged the full price + taxes when making the order with a trade-in online. When you go in-store to pick up the new phone and trade in your old phone, they'll refund you the difference and with that, your taxes will also be adjusted according to the final price.

Source: I traded in my Pixel 6 for a Pixel 7 a month ago at Best Buy.

Select Activate Later option when adding phone.
Activate Now will take you to carrier activation.

Store verified and accepted my XR 64gb trade in, but phone not in store stock. I paid for it to be shipped to my home. $39 plus tax (on $110 ???) USPS signature required (I was told).
