You'll get charged the full price + taxes when making the order with a trade-in online. When you go in-store to pick up the new phone and trade in your old phone, they'll refund you the difference and with that, your taxes will also be adjusted according to the final price.

Source: I traded in my Pixel 6 for a Pixel 7 a month ago at Best Buy.

I traded my 6 pro for a 7 pro and I am out of pocket a total of $77 and that includes the tax I paid! Mind you that is taking into account the $200 gift card I have to spend at Bestbuy and the $85 dollars in rewards I got for purchasing it with my BB card! Now the gift card does not expire but the rewards do on Dec 31st. But There is away around that. I don't want to just blow $85 in rewards on something at BB. I received my phone on Nov 1st received my return box on Nov 7th and shipped out my trade in on Nov 8th. I received my trade in credit today Nov 17th. This is just to give others an idea of the time it takes in case they are worried!
