You'll get charged the full price + taxes when making the order with a trade-in online. When you go in-store to pick up the new phone and trade in your old phone, they'll refund you the difference and with that, your taxes will also be adjusted according to the final price.

Source: I traded in my Pixel 6 for a Pixel 7 a month ago at Best Buy.

Purchasing in-store is the best way. You will leave with only the final charge on your card. Ordering online and processing the trade-in at the store will put a ~$550 charge on your card for up to 3 days. That's especially bad for debit card users.

I just called my bank to file a dispute. They gave be a conditional credit for the charge. However, that doesn't mean it will be resolved in my favor. I wish I had used Paypal but I didn't think it would be a problem.

if i had done online route.

Just did this deal in the morning. Placed order online for pickup, traded in a Tmobile iPhone XR (said it was Verizon). They accepted the trade in and I paid $423 out the door for a Pixel 7 Pro 256gb.

If there is a refund posted to the transaction, AMEX may not issue the cashback or claw it back if the refund brings the transaction value to below $250. They standardly do a claw back on refunds after cancellations. Not sure how they will handle this. Hope that it works in your favor though.

For people getting their XRs from ST or the likes, you don't need to log in to your Apple account to get the imei number. All you have to do is power on and touch that little "I" icon on the lower right of the phone. It'll give you imei number and other info.
