Price would be $1049 ($1199 - $150).
Rationale: I want a light MacBook for travel and yet need to have it handle more memory intensive uses. I was looking at the 14" but concerned w/its heft (I would likely have bought the 16GB/1TB model at 2K. I figure having a Thunderbolt 3 slot for additional storage (e.g. a small NVME attached drive) handles the storage issue.
$1050 isn't as cheap as $800 ("sale" price on the 8GB/256GB variant), but still better than full retail or buying a refurb version (currently $1019 at Apple).
If Apple would apply the gift card to refurb's, that would make it better (I hesitate to say slick), it would theoretically be $1019 - $150 = $869.

Airpods Pro 2: $249.99 - $50 = $199.99 (all time low)
Beats Studio Buds: $149.99 - $50 = $99.99 (not an all time low, but it's the best deal I can find)
I just ordered a M2 Air (16gb/512gb) through their edu PORTAL for $1479 (before taxes)...
Thinking i should cancel and wait if the BF sale is better.

So I am looking to replace 2 iphones, my iphone 12 on tmobile and an SE 2nd gen on ATT Prepaid. If I can snag a deal on a 13 or 14, I'd upgrade the 12 but I am resigned to waiting for the 15 and USB C next year instead. So I started looking at options for the SE. Carrier deals will not work for me so this $50 GC seemed like a good idea. But after reading this thread and discovering this does NOT stack with the veteran pricing, I decided to start comparing.
3rd gen SE is the same price. There's no point in waiting to buy that phone as it's the same price after the discount.
Iphone 12 or 13 or 13 mini is $10 cheaper with the vet discount today. I didn't bother checking the 14 models.
ETA 2:

I would not compare that price to the 8/256 model pricing, because the model you are looking at (actually any mac mini or mba or other mac which has a ram or storage upgrade, nevermind both) are rarely if ever discounted and those deals on the base model are frequent but never seem to "cascade" ... like you will almost never see an 8/500 system that retails for 1200 drop to 1000. So the GC deal is at least hypothetically a good option. I checked the Vet pricing on the MBA and the GC deal is cheaper by about $20 (or 30?) so ... it's kind of worth it but the better question is, do you need the 16gb or can you live with an 8gb system? Having had my 8/256 model for a year (at $800 from costco last year) I kind of wished I'd not bought the macbook air in the first place, I'd be a bit happier with the m2 model (more USB-C ports, wouldnt really need the hub) but would want the 16/500gb system instead. And its a damn shame this does not apply to refurbs or especially to the edu/vet pricing.

I like to play with virtual machine guests (I teach computer science), so the ability to run vm's or docker etc. is important. I also do Unity development and again don't want to be memory limited. Yes, I could go grab the 14" M1 pro w/1TB SSD and 16GB, but I really like the idea of this MB Air as a capable travel companion and keeping it small and somewhat light is a major factor.
If Apple were to allow the GC on refurbs, I will likely go for it. If not, maybe just wait until I retire from teaching (spring 23) and have to give back the intel MB Pro (w/32GB) and see what the situation is then.
