After that you install Ubuntu and use it forever technically. 8gb enough for any daily work with Linux.

Eh, I'll be lucky if the thing is still in once piece in three years given how the family member that will be using it treats their electronics

I almost passed on this deal, but decided to give it a shot. This laptop is great. There's never been a Chromebook with 8gb ram at this price. This thing is fast and a steal at this price. It is true that it can be difficult to see the keyboard keys. But crank up the keyboard light with alt + brightness and that fixes the issue.

Sounds good.. How much was that cable for? Also is this Chromebook good enough to take online classes on Google Meet or Zoom? Will it boot up fast? My current Dell Inspiron Laptop is taking almost 15 mins to just boot up..
Cable is about $15, I have not tried Zoom, but it should work very well with the 8gb ram. Boots as soon as you open it, as should most Chromebooks.

Looks like the built in sound doesn't work in Linux the c433 and other kaby lake devices.

If it has a mechanical hard drive replace it with SSD or nvme drive

Seems hard and buggy to get a full linux install on this:

How feasable would it to just run chrome/firefox in a linux container once AUE hits?

Please note once AUE hits you just loose new updates. The chrome os will still run fine with the last patch version which could run you up to at least another year if you are fine with not being latest and greatest and not having to deal with installing another os. In 4 years you might be better off buying a new replacement anyways.

You could also try the ChromeOS flex as an option.

By the time this Chromebook hits AUE Lacros will likely be the default browser, which means you'll still be getting browser updates. Lacros is already very stable.

This Chromebook can definitely run the zoom pwa. And yes, it boots quickly.

I bought this and it works wonderfully in terms of performance compared to more expensive chromebooks i use it for development with linux 8gb is critical on chromebook with linux. u can also add a microsd card since the 64gb is one of the biggest disadvantages and this addon can be accessed by linux

on the downside it is heavier than more expensive chromebooks

Costco has the 128GB version for $229 plus $15 s/h -through 11/20.

$65 more for 64 GB storage compared to this deal is NOT a deal at all, imho. Slap in a 256 or 512 GB sdcard and problem solved.

This is an excellent deal from Best Buy and at $179 with 8 GB RAM is a no brainer, imo.

Just throwing the 128GB out there for anyone who might be interested. Sharing.
I bought the 64GB the first time around, so no arguments from me. Typing on it right now. Pondering a second one for myself but I already have a gen 8 HP - this one's for my dad.

So, how do you like it so far? How is the battery holding up?

I didn't see it in the specs and it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner, right?

Did you add a sdcard to extend storage?

This thing is chunky, of low quality keyboard and touchpad. Not recommended.

Had been looking for something with a flip screen for when I need to pull up my character sheet & maps for playing D&D. This fits the bill, especially with the 8G RAM. Will likely attempt the Linux install for fun, despite it having a few issues. Thanks!
