Man there are no Surge Protection specifications that I could find for this device other than 180J (I think). No VPR/Clamping, MCOV/RMS, response time, etc. Couldn't even find the model listed on UL's website.

I'd guess this is not enough to use with a NAS to help it shutdown gracefully without data loss?

Put a raspberry pi and poll a smart switch, if it's not reachable send msg to NAS

That was my ignorance of the matter. Many of them (most?) are actually lead and acid.

Upon researching the topic though (wanted a UPS for a home server) I discovered that even the top-rated 1500VA Sinewave units, from both APC and CyberPower, have issues with fire hazard, foul smell, annoying high-pitched noise (probably coil whine), etc.

Literally the top rated models.

I don't know what to buy now. The thought of an acid-lead battery catching fire is not reassuring.

Lead acid catching fire is not something you should worry about. It's lithium catching fire that should worry you. They straight up explode when they get too hot. Lead acid does not. With that said, every electronic device has the ability to start a fire if it's not properly built, or not properly wired in your home, your home is also a big culprit for starting fires if the wiring is old and overloaded. You could start a fire daisy chaining power strip together etc unsafely. This is why new electrical code has GFCIs and AFCIs every where. They help prevent these incidents. You could always install one to the outlet you plug the UPS into for an extra precaution.

We've never had problems with our desktop or server UPS batteries. All have been lead-acid. The last few years, more lithium batteries are used in UPS systems but you'll pay more.

I did see people on reddit and in reviews on Amazon how some units caught fire and sulfuric acid was vaporized in the air. Sounds dangerous. :/
