Instead of just saying, hey buy this phone outright and we'll give you this gift card for this much.. But no, they make this as confusing af so carriers still win in the end.

If they have not changed the process for this year, you will get the Walmart gift card emailed to you within 24-48 hours after purchase. I have upgraded this exact way 3 years in a row via Walmart because I have an old grandfathered ATT plan and do not want it changed or touched. This is the probably one of the few retailers besides ATT Corporate stores that can do upgrades or add lines without changing your current plan.

In 2019 I lined up in store and purchased 2 phones in store. It was $350 actual gift cards back then, they were loaded and activated at the time of phone purchase but they said the funds should be available after 4 hours back then.

In 2020 I did 2 lines again but it was only $300 gift cards but via email. The emailed gift cards and PIN codes came in a few hours after the phone purchases.

In 2021 I got smarter. I booked each phone's activation appointment 1 day apart. This time I upgraded 3 lines. The first $300 credit came in within 2 hours of paying for the first phone upgrade. So for the second phone's activation the next day, I used the first phone's gift card and paid down $300. Same with the 3rd phone upgrade the following day as the second phone's gift card email came in shortly same day after they processed the second activation. Therefore I am left with only 1 $300 gift card to spend later. Yes I went there 3 days in a row, lucky it's only 4 miles away and you get to reserve the phone size and color you wanted on their available phones on-hand list.

You DO NOT get monthly billing credits. This way you are never tied up for 3 years because billing credits balance is forfeited if you cancel or port out. The only situation where you may get billing credits is if you did a trade in and received $800 credit or whatever corporate ATT was promoting. But then you are REALLY tied up for 36 months if you wanted the $800 or whatever the ATT trade in promo was offering. The trade in promo billing credit deal is ONLY worth it if you plan on staying with ATT for 3 years AND if they were giving you $800 for an old cracked phone. I have never done this because the trade in promotions always required a plan change for me. Sorry I can not shed any light on this type of deal stacking as I do not want my grandfathered plan changed. Perhaps someone who has traded in as well as received the $300 gift card can share their experience here.

Please note, you ARE required to do the installment plan. There must be some kind of cell carrier kickback commissions for installment plans along with the line upgrade or new line activation commissions to the retailer. The monthly installment amount to be paid is dependent on how much you pay up front during checkout. So if the phone is $1049 and you pay down $849 plus your state's sales tax on the full amount, it will leave you with a $200 balance due, your monthly installments would be $200/36 months = $5.56 per month.

After 2 billing cycles (probably when the cell carrier commissions are paid due to Net60 terms) you can pay off your remaining balance via the ATT website and then cancel and go to another carrier and request the unlock code via their unlocking portal entering your IMEI number and cell phone number and email address. It usually takes a few days for the unlock email with the codes to arrive, a few times it came same day as submission.

For me I pay them off right before the next year's promos and request the unlock, unless I need a phone to be unlocked sooner due to international travel etc, then I would pay off that line ASAP as it may take a few days to process the unlock. Once the installments are paid off, I can quickly upgrade again via Walmart Black Friday promo, wash, rinse and repeat.

So to sum it up, you will receive your $300 gift card via email shortly after the phone purchase and activation. If you want the phone unlocked as soon as possible, do not do trade in billing credits and be tied up for 36 months. Pay down as much as you can at the time of purchase. Pay off the remaining balance after 2 billing cycles and request the unlock. For iPhones you do not have to do anything after requesting the unlock. Once you receive the email that it has been approved, just insert your non-ATT SIM card and it will re-activate the phone via Apple's server and it will be unlocked permanently, it will reboot, and probably automatically do a carrier settings update right after.

I just chatted with Verizon & they will only give me $400 in promo billing credits over 36 months for my XR and that's if I buy a 14. If I buy a 13, I can trade it in to Verizon $ get $84!!!!!

Question to Rep:Walmart has a $300 gift card if you buy a 14pro max
through versions from them. I'm trying to figure out if I
can trade in my current phone to Verizon if I buy the 14
promax max
Verizon Agent
if you purchase through Walmart and trade in through
Verizon you will get the normal trade in value of the
device which would be $84 that can be applied to the
account as a one time lump sum credit or Verizon egift
card
Funny how Best Buy has the exact same upgrade promo for Verizon customers then

I am tempted to do this upgrade, bc instead monthly bill credit, they give you a gift card outright. You can pay off balance and not stuck for 36 months. But I am not sure what I am going to do with 500 walmart gc.
You can always use it to buy PS5, other electronics, groceries, etc. lol

I am looking to buy Verizon or ATT iPhone 13 Pro 128GB Gold price is $24.98/month. What is the minimum amount I will be paying for two months of service before requesting unlock. We will be getting 450$ gift card. But this also comes with activation fee and two months of service. I am not sure should I go with Verizon or ATT?

Could someone please help me here and see if I understand correctly on how to come out best without having an existing VZ account and no intention to stay?

1. I get the phone listed here, say for example, the iphone 13 pro max for $1100, sign up for VZ services, and get $500 WM GC.

2. Once setup, I call VZ to pay off the phone.

3. I am still obligated to stay with their services for 2 months and then I can cancel with an unlocked phone.

4. I see from VZ website the cheapest rate for a single line is $70 + tax & fees. Is that the plan I can use for the two months with this deal or is there something better?

For the math, would it be something like 1100(+tax) - 500 + 160 (w/ tax for 2 months service) + 30 activation so in total, roughly $875 all taxes and fees included. Not discounting the GC, all cash would be $1375 which is quite significant.

Is my math and the steps above the best route or is there a better approach to save even further by potentially not staying the full 60 days or something with VZ?

kind of wondering the same but appears to be negligible difference between plan pricing for single lines between the two carriers. i think generally VZ phones are more compatible with other carriers.

all said and done, if we are forced to stay the 2 months, these deals are pretty luke warm at best. probably better off getting a good refurbished condition off ebay.

ATT existing customer. Not planning to leave ATT. No phone to trade in, just want an iPhone 14.

I'd like a new iPhone, but don't want to be forced to switch to an unlimited plan. A few comments said they previously didn't need to switch plans to get iPhone deals, but the way I'm reading this, it seems I will have to switch. Are these terms for people who trade in old phones with AT&T?

from Terms & Conditions link: Down payment: May be required and depends on a variety of factors. Down payment if required will be either 30% of sales price or a dollar amount currently ranging from $200 to $1,400 (amount subject to change and may be higher). Examples (amounts approximate): $1,099.99 sales price with $0 down is $30.56 per month, with $330 down (30%) is $21.39 per month, or with $600 down is $13.89 per month for 36 months AT&T Installment Plan with Next Up: Price includes monthly smartphone installment payment and a separate additional $6/month AT&T Next Up upgrade feature charge to be upgrade eligible with qualified trade in when 50% of device cost of the financed device is paid off. Upgrade requires a minimum of 30 to 90 days on installment depending on credit and other factors (subject to change), account in good standing, trade-in of financed device in good physical and fully functional condition through the AT&T Next Up trade-in program (excludes trade in program where you receive an instant credit or AT&T promotion card) and purchase of a new eligible smartphone on an eligible installment agreement with qualified wireless service. After upgrade, unbilled installments are waived. Next Up $6 monthly payments do not apply toward financed device cost balance, are non-refundable, and may be canceled at any time, resulting in waiver of right to trade in and upgrade during current installment agreement term. See att.com/next and your Retail Installment Agreement for full details. Service: Eligible postpaid voice and data service is required and extra.

I have an old AT&T family share plan. We use WiFi and never go over the limit (which is low). THe last time I checked, unlimited family plans cost about $25.00/month (plus fees) more than our existing plan, so I don't want to change.

How many lines and how much do you pay total per line including access fee before taxes?

No what I mean is, can you get discounted service at either carrier? Are you a first responder, healthcare worker ,teacher, military etc? Do you have Verizon FiOS or att fiber?

Walmart iPhones (unless specifically locked to StraightTalk) are US Flex Lock based activation policy. This means you can just put in whatever you want in the phone, and the phone will lock to whatever policy it first sees. This means if you don't want to stay on VZW, DO NOT PUT IN THE VZW SIM! This also means you can just plop in a T-Mobile SIM and chat up T-Force to ask them to unlock it, as they won't even see a DPP/EIP associated with the IMEI.

Do I keep getting the trade-in credits if I:
  1. Buy an iPhone 14 from Walmart on Line 1
  2. Activate Line 1 iphone, Trade in an iPhone 11 and get $800 and pay it off in full
  3. pay Line 1 iPhone 14 off in full
  4. Sell iPhone 14 and use an older phone on Line 1
Not sure if I'll continue to receive credits if I keep the line but don't have the phone anymore. Anyone?
