Instead of just saying, hey buy this phone outright and we'll give you this gift card for this much.. But no, they make this as confusing af so carriers still win in the end.

If they have not changed the process for this year, you will get the Walmart gift card emailed to you within 24-48 hours after purchase. I have upgraded this exact way 3 years in a row via Walmart because I have an old grandfathered ATT plan and do not want it changed or touched. This is the probably one of the few retailers besides ATT Corporate stores that can do upgrades or add lines without changing your current plan.

In 2019 I lined up in store and purchased 2 phones in store. It was $350 actual gift cards back then, they were loaded and activated at the time of phone purchase but they said the funds should be available after 4 hours back then.

In 2020 I did 2 lines again but it was only $300 gift cards but via email. The emailed gift cards and PIN codes came in a few hours after the phone purchases.

In 2021 I got smarter. I booked each phone's activation appointment 1 day apart. This time I upgraded 3 lines. The first $300 credit came in within 2 hours of paying for the first phone upgrade. So for the second phone's activation the next day, I used the first phone's gift card and paid down $300. Same with the 3rd phone upgrade the following day as the second phone's gift card email came in shortly same day after they processed the second activation. Therefore I am left with only 1 $300 gift card to spend later. Yes I went there 3 days in a row, lucky it's only 4 miles away and you get to reserve the phone size and color you wanted on their available phones on-hand list.

You DO NOT get monthly billing credits. This way you are never tied up for 3 years because billing credits balance is forfeited if you cancel or port out. The only situation where you may get billing credits is if you did a trade in and received $800 credit or whatever corporate ATT was promoting. But then you are REALLY tied up for 36 months if you wanted the $800 or whatever the ATT trade in promo was offering. The trade in promo billing credit deal is ONLY worth it if you plan on staying with ATT for 3 years AND if they were giving you $800 for an old cracked phone. I have never done this because the trade in promotions always required a plan change for me. Sorry I can not shed any light on this type of deal stacking as I do not want my grandfathered plan changed. Perhaps someone who has traded in as well as received the $300 gift card can share their experience here.

Please note, you ARE required to do the installment plan. There must be some kind of cell carrier kickback commissions for installment plans along with the line upgrade or new line activation commissions to the retailer. The monthly installment amount to be paid is dependent on how much you pay up front during checkout. So if the phone is $1049 and you pay down $849 plus your state's sales tax on the full amount, it will leave you with a $200 balance due, your monthly installments would be $200/36 months = $5.56 per month.

After 2 billing cycles (probably when the cell carrier commissions are paid due to Net60 terms) you can pay off your remaining balance via the ATT website and then cancel and go to another carrier and request the unlock code via their unlocking portal entering your IMEI number and cell phone number and email address. It usually takes a few days for the unlock email with the codes to arrive, a few times it came same day as submission.

For me I pay them off right before the next year's promos and request the unlock, unless I need a phone to be unlocked sooner due to international travel etc, then I would pay off that line ASAP as it may take a few days to process the unlock. Once the installments are paid off, I can quickly upgrade again via Walmart Black Friday promo, wash, rinse and repeat.

So to sum it up, you will receive your $300 gift card via email shortly after the phone purchase and activation. If you want the phone unlocked as soon as possible, do not do trade in billing credits and be tied up for 36 months. Pay down as much as you can at the time of purchase. Pay off the remaining balance after 2 billing cycles and request the unlock. For iPhones you do not have to do anything after requesting the unlock. Once you receive the email that it has been approved, just insert your non-ATT SIM card and it will re-activate the phone via Apple's server and it will be unlocked permanently, it will reboot, and probably automatically do a carrier settings update right after.

So for me I know i will be staying on T-Mobile even though it is $70 in my case. In that case agree that it may not make sense when comparing to 25-30 per month but if trading in for 250 and still staying on current plan does not even more sense!
at $70, yes it is an expensive plan but for 3 years you'll pay $2500 for the service and maybe your current phone is worth $200 in open market so about $2700 for a phone and 3 years of service. so if you take than $800 worth of phone which you can buy outright from Apple directly at maybe 10% discount buy buying gift card at discount from target etc then that $800 phone is worth $720 - $200 from trade in = $500. your net cost for servie is about $2000 for 3 years. you can lot of cheaper options for that kind of service.

but if you service cost is like $20 to 30 then it makes little more sense. my family member is on tmobile and pays $18 per line with taxes for unlimited data. until sprint merger, they'd update 1 to 2 lines every year by trading in an old used for 2 years and would pay just taxes on new phone. Like, they traded in samsung S9 and got oneplus 8T at zero cost, traded in 8 and got SE 2020, trade in XS and got 12 mini, before than they traded in S5 or S6 to get S9. once they got oneplus 6T by trading in oneplus original. all these phones were for free with bill credits and they just paid taxes on it. for $18 per line, it looked like they were paying just for phone and got service for free.

i think you are not on hook for even a single day as it says activation and not how long you need to be activated to get walmart GC. but if you trade in something for bill credits then you'd loose remaining bill credits and whatever amount is left is due right away when you move out.

Got it! So this the breakdown after going through your post

No monthly credit:
XS Max - Trade in benefit at apple.com $200
iPhone 256 gb price $800
final cost of the phone 600
plus 2 years of service at $70 1680
total cost 1680+200 = 1880

Monthly credit:
XS Max - Trade in benefit of $800 from TMobile
iPhone 256 gb price $830
Total cost of phone $30
plus 2 years of service at $70 1680
total cost = 1680+30 = 1710

Looks like for me at least I get benefit of 170 if I go with monthly credits.

Can you please let me know if this comes with dual sim? I have one office and another home number from same carrier.
Both 13 and 14 are dual SIM capable, however:

iPhone 13 units comes with 1 SIM card slot and 1 eSIM inside.

USA iPhone 14 units are ALL eSIM (2 eSIM inside)
No more physical SIM tray anymore
(no way to insert and place a physical nano SIM card)

yes but if you are open for other plans and you end up paying let's say $300 for one year on ATT prepaid for 16gb pm, or Tmobile prepaid at $50 pm for unlimited, or maybe depriotized plans on companies like Redpocket etc where you'd pay only $20 pm then on the frugal extreme of the numbers it would looks like:

No monthly credit:

XS Max - Trade in benefit at apple.com $200

iPhone 256 gb price $800

final cost of the phone 600

buying gift cards of Apple from Target/Bestbuy. they are offering $15 worth their own gift card with $100 worth apple gift card. so $600 will give you $600 Apple gift card and additional $90 gift card of Bestbuy or Target. If you can sweeten this deal with Cash app boost then it will give you flat 10% instant discount so you'd spend $540 to get $600 worth apple gift card with $90 worth BB or Target gift card.

plus 2 years of service at $25 if you go with ATT not depriorized plan of 16gb pm = $600. I am considering ATT as 16gb is like unlimited for lot of people unless they are streaming on the go everyday.

total cost $600 for service+$540 = 1140 which includes $90 worth target/BB gift card.

aah yes so basically it is two different levers: provider and trade in benefit. in my case if I were to stay on t moble it makes sense for monthly credit but i am bound to them
if i go with another provider, it makes sense to go with what you are sayinh

which cash app are we talking about? r -a - ten?

Not the cash back app but Cash app like Venmo which is Peer to Peer money transfering app. https://slickdeals.net/f/16222837-cash-app-boosts-at-10-off-for-walmart-target-starbucks-and-more-ymmv?attrsrc=search%3Aterm%3Acash+app%7Csearch%3Apage%3A1%7Csearch%3Aposition%3A1%7Csearch%3Aresult_type%3Athread%7Csearch%3Aresult_id%3A16222837&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1
