Instead of just saying, hey buy this phone outright and we'll give you this gift card for this much.. But no, they make this as confusing af so carriers still win in the end.

If they have not changed the process for this year, you will get the Walmart gift card emailed to you within 24-48 hours after purchase. I have upgraded this exact way 3 years in a row via Walmart because I have an old grandfathered ATT plan and do not want it changed or touched. This is the probably one of the few retailers besides ATT Corporate stores that can do upgrades or add lines without changing your current plan.

In 2019 I lined up in store and purchased 2 phones in store. It was $350 actual gift cards back then, they were loaded and activated at the time of phone purchase but they said the funds should be available after 4 hours back then.

In 2020 I did 2 lines again but it was only $300 gift cards but via email. The emailed gift cards and PIN codes came in a few hours after the phone purchases.

In 2021 I got smarter. I booked each phone's activation appointment 1 day apart. This time I upgraded 3 lines. The first $300 credit came in within 2 hours of paying for the first phone upgrade. So for the second phone's activation the next day, I used the first phone's gift card and paid down $300. Same with the 3rd phone upgrade the following day as the second phone's gift card email came in shortly same day after they processed the second activation. Therefore I am left with only 1 $300 gift card to spend later. Yes I went there 3 days in a row, lucky it's only 4 miles away and you get to reserve the phone size and color you wanted on their available phones on-hand list.

You DO NOT get monthly billing credits. This way you are never tied up for 3 years because billing credits balance is forfeited if you cancel or port out. The only situation where you may get billing credits is if you did a trade in and received $800 credit or whatever corporate ATT was promoting. But then you are REALLY tied up for 36 months if you wanted the $800 or whatever the ATT trade in promo was offering. The trade in promo billing credit deal is ONLY worth it if you plan on staying with ATT for 3 years AND if they were giving you $800 for an old cracked phone. I have never done this because the trade in promotions always required a plan change for me. Sorry I can not shed any light on this type of deal stacking as I do not want my grandfathered plan changed. Perhaps someone who has traded in as well as received the $300 gift card can share their experience here.

Please note, you ARE required to do the installment plan. There must be some kind of cell carrier kickback commissions for installment plans along with the line upgrade or new line activation commissions to the retailer. The monthly installment amount to be paid is dependent on how much you pay up front during checkout. So if the phone is $1049 and you pay down $849 plus your state's sales tax on the full amount, it will leave you with a $200 balance due, your monthly installments would be $200/36 months = $5.56 per month.

After 2 billing cycles (probably when the cell carrier commissions are paid due to Net60 terms) you can pay off your remaining balance via the ATT website and then cancel and go to another carrier and request the unlock code via their unlocking portal entering your IMEI number and cell phone number and email address. It usually takes a few days for the unlock email with the codes to arrive, a few times it came same day as submission.

For me I pay them off right before the next year's promos and request the unlock, unless I need a phone to be unlocked sooner due to international travel etc, then I would pay off that line ASAP as it may take a few days to process the unlock. Once the installments are paid off, I can quickly upgrade again via Walmart Black Friday promo, wash, rinse and repeat.

So to sum it up, you will receive your $300 gift card via email shortly after the phone purchase and activation. If you want the phone unlocked as soon as possible, do not do trade in billing credits and be tied up for 36 months. Pay down as much as you can at the time of purchase. Pay off the remaining balance after 2 billing cycles and request the unlock. For iPhones you do not have to do anything after requesting the unlock. Once you receive the email that it has been approved, just insert your non-ATT SIM card and it will re-activate the phone via Apple's server and it will be unlocked permanently, it will reboot, and probably automatically do a carrier settings update right after.

Store rep sold me with T-MOBILE, he suggested that there won't be any activation fee only with T-MOBILE and I can cancel the service after a month. I already received the egc from Walmart. Hope I am not in any trouble with T-MOBILE option as seems no one else has opted this.
What plan were you on?

I am humbly sorry. Despite my strong belief that you could not double-dip the Walmart gift card and Verizon trade-in offers I walked into Verizon after getting my iphone 14 Plus and to my surprise I was given $400 in credits over 36 months for my Iphone 8 Plus with no hassle. I even told them that I had purchased the phone at Walmart.

That said, I don't understand why people are so anxious to pay off their phone at Verizon. It is clear in their offer documentation that trade-in credit stop if the phone is paid off. Also the credits stop if you end your unlimited 'more' plan and get reduced if you downgrade to a 'start more' plan.

I bought a 14 Plus online and a 14 Pro at a Walmart store. The in-store purchase took an unbelievably long time even though I had no wait to get served. I discovered that the gift card comes immediately for in-store purchases but 'up to 25 days' for online purchases. I'm curious whether anybody has received a gift card from an online purchase.
The last few times I tried doing this (years ago even at corporate locations) they wanted me to mail it in. Did they check the device and apply credits on the spot?

Forgive me if I missed this in the thread (I've seen conflicting information): Att customer, I ordered last night online. Says it arrives by Dec. 6th. Since it's past the Dec. 2nd window to activate, am I out-of-luck in the gift card or are we all crossing our fingers at this point?

I returned my 2 iPhone 14 Pro's at customer service yesterday (the electronics section said they did not sell contract phones and all local stores stopped as well).

Returned it, but Verizon still says I owe payments for 3 years. Went back this morning and the store said it wasn't their problem. In hindsight I should have found a store that sold contract phones and returned or exchanged them. I am unclear if my return automatically carries over to Verizon or if I needed a cellphone salesman to register it in some Verizon backend system.

Don't make the same mistake I did.

It clearly states in the return policy.

Returnable to store? —> No !!

Items purchased in store or items picked up or delivered from a store can only be returned to a store.

Is it possible to stack the gift card and $800 trade in credit from Verizon? I was reading it's possible to buy through Walmart and then go to vzw.com/tradein separately to get the $800 trade in credits. Can someone confirm?
One person has confirmed it worked for them. Many of us have spoke with Verizon and were told deal is stackable but are waiting for the phones to deliver. Personally upgrading 3 lines with 14 pro's . Bought Pixel 4's off ebay for $100 that will be trading for $800 bill credits

It is too late now but the best trade in with Verizon is the Pixel 4. They are valuing it at $800 and can be bought online for ~$100. Turns out to be a net of 700 which when combined with the Walmart gc means the 14 pro is essentially free. You could then sell your actual phone for a small profit or keep as a backup

Thanks for this. Going to return my 13 Pro Max @ Walmart Electronic Section and plan to ask that my Verizon "Contract" with the phone will be cancel and refunded... If they're not sure then I will most likely go to a Verizon store and cancel the service/plan after returning the phone. We'll see....

You would think Walmart phone rep as the ability to cancel a service plan after returning the product....
I've done a phone return few years back and i ordered online but Walmart sent me wrong model(typical of walmart).
My advice is to find a Walmart has mobile kiosk to process your return. Mobile Rep initiates the return on kiosk first and return slip print out. Then Customer service can process the return with manager approval and finalize the return. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a payment for the device with the carrier. Be prepare for blame game as either walmart or carrier will do anything!
Good luck!

I am wondering the same thing. I was about to order a 14 Plus but it says that I would get it on 12/5 which is 3 days after it says it needs to be activated to get the $300 gift card. I did not order the iPhone.

So just to be clear, as an existing vzw customer, i can buy an iphone 13 pro thru walmart online, but then to do the trade-in i have to go to a physical vzw store to do the trade in? And the trade-in can be an old pixel 4 off ebay?

Do i need to be the vzw account owner or just an authorized manager?

My account manager is my mom, and she died last year, just havent taken her name off because she got a discounted plan.

I've had the phone in my cart since yesterday because I was afraid to pull the trigger with a delivery date of 12/5. I just refreshed it a few minutes ago and it changed to 12/1, which will mean it will arrive prior to the 12/2 activation cut off. I went ahead and ordered it. Now I'm just hoping the trade in promo works as that says it ends tomorrow on Verizon's website.
