Instead of just saying, hey buy this phone outright and we'll give you this gift card for this much.. But no, they make this as confusing af so carriers still win in the end.

If they have not changed the process for this year, you will get the Walmart gift card emailed to you within 24-48 hours after purchase. I have upgraded this exact way 3 years in a row via Walmart because I have an old grandfathered ATT plan and do not want it changed or touched. This is the probably one of the few retailers besides ATT Corporate stores that can do upgrades or add lines without changing your current plan.

In 2019 I lined up in store and purchased 2 phones in store. It was $350 actual gift cards back then, they were loaded and activated at the time of phone purchase but they said the funds should be available after 4 hours back then.

In 2020 I did 2 lines again but it was only $300 gift cards but via email. The emailed gift cards and PIN codes came in a few hours after the phone purchases.

In 2021 I got smarter. I booked each phone's activation appointment 1 day apart. This time I upgraded 3 lines. The first $300 credit came in within 2 hours of paying for the first phone upgrade. So for the second phone's activation the next day, I used the first phone's gift card and paid down $300. Same with the 3rd phone upgrade the following day as the second phone's gift card email came in shortly same day after they processed the second activation. Therefore I am left with only 1 $300 gift card to spend later. Yes I went there 3 days in a row, lucky it's only 4 miles away and you get to reserve the phone size and color you wanted on their available phones on-hand list.

You DO NOT get monthly billing credits. This way you are never tied up for 3 years because billing credits balance is forfeited if you cancel or port out. The only situation where you may get billing credits is if you did a trade in and received $800 credit or whatever corporate ATT was promoting. But then you are REALLY tied up for 36 months if you wanted the $800 or whatever the ATT trade in promo was offering. The trade in promo billing credit deal is ONLY worth it if you plan on staying with ATT for 3 years AND if they were giving you $800 for an old cracked phone. I have never done this because the trade in promotions always required a plan change for me. Sorry I can not shed any light on this type of deal stacking as I do not want my grandfathered plan changed. Perhaps someone who has traded in as well as received the $300 gift card can share their experience here.

Please note, you ARE required to do the installment plan. There must be some kind of cell carrier kickback commissions for installment plans along with the line upgrade or new line activation commissions to the retailer. The monthly installment amount to be paid is dependent on how much you pay up front during checkout. So if the phone is $1049 and you pay down $849 plus your state's sales tax on the full amount, it will leave you with a $200 balance due, your monthly installments would be $200/36 months = $5.56 per month.

After 2 billing cycles (probably when the cell carrier commissions are paid due to Net60 terms) you can pay off your remaining balance via the ATT website and then cancel and go to another carrier and request the unlock code via their unlocking portal entering your IMEI number and cell phone number and email address. It usually takes a few days for the unlock email with the codes to arrive, a few times it came same day as submission.

For me I pay them off right before the next year's promos and request the unlock, unless I need a phone to be unlocked sooner due to international travel etc, then I would pay off that line ASAP as it may take a few days to process the unlock. Once the installments are paid off, I can quickly upgrade again via Walmart Black Friday promo, wash, rinse and repeat.

So to sum it up, you will receive your $300 gift card via email shortly after the phone purchase and activation. If you want the phone unlocked as soon as possible, do not do trade in billing credits and be tied up for 36 months. Pay down as much as you can at the time of purchase. Pay off the remaining balance after 2 billing cycles and request the unlock. For iPhones you do not have to do anything after requesting the unlock. Once you receive the email that it has been approved, just insert your non-ATT SIM card and it will re-activate the phone via Apple's server and it will be unlocked permanently, it will reboot, and probably automatically do a carrier settings update right after.

Talked to Verizon chat, they said the $800 trade-in credits promotion offer expires 11/27/2022.

That sucks. If I buy through Walmart with a delivery date of December, then the trade-in promo won't exist anymore and no more double dip?

Talked to Walmart rep over phone, they said the eGift Card would arrive and should work even after December 2, but the person didn't seem like they knew what they were saying.

Any thoughts on whether the $300 GC will get canceled if I cancel the new line within 3 days (to avoid paying 1st month + activation). Looks like I will need to pay off the device with cash at a corporate store. I don't mind my device being locked to VZW.

Wouldn't it be linked to the purchase date?

Hey did you do the trade in online or in store at Verizon? The online trade in link is only showing $253 for me instead of the $1k.
I didn't do a trade in. I just purchased the phone on Walmart online with att financing for the $300 gift card. I'm gonna try to trade in my 11 pro for the $800 bill credits at att for the "double-dip." If it doesn't work, I'll just give my phone to a family member.

Just to clarify - step 1 is to go to Walmart site and buy the phone (including adding a new line on my account) get the $300 gift card. Then go to Verizon/tradein and trade in my old phone (iPhone 12). However, the value that shows when I go to the trade in website is only $253?

You need to go in to a Verizon store after activation to have the best chance of getting the correct bonus. They can look up and see that you have bought a 14 phone

After activation? Wouldn't that mean the current tradein promotion is already over?

The eligibility date is based on the sales transaction and not when you receive or activate the device. The sales transaction date is documented in the Installment Loan Agreement. See attached example.

The iPhone 13 series has a different trade in promo. It's $600/300 for tier 1 and 2 trade ins under the "premium" unlimited plans. See VZW's website for more info.

T mobile has the lowest monthly rate among three carrier and can unlock after 45 days. Why seems most people here tried either att or Verizon, but no T mobile?

Anyone has success paying off their phone thru ATT or Verizon. I logged into Verizon account and it doesn't allow me to pay it off. Say I'm not eligible.

I was not able to upgrade any lines this year. Spent 2+ hours!! Walmart employee was very helpful and tried 3-4 times. I spent over an hour total with 5 different AT&T reps, and none were able to help. Everyone said yes the lines, and the account is eligible for upgrade, but Walmart activation failed at AT&T check

If anyone was able to upgrade without unlimited plan please let me know
Non-unlimited grandfathered data share plan here. 4th year upgrading at Walmart, first 2 years I did it at brick and mortar store, no issues at all. But the vendor's system sucks as it needs to interface Walmart's system AND the cell carrier's database, activation, credit approval system.

Sometimes the system would crash and they would write down the order ID and then start all over and key in the order ID to resume and sometimes the vendor agent needed to call in order ID codes and get someone on the other end to review and push the order through. But it has been 4 for 4 so far. 2019 - 2022.

The 3rd year 2021 I ordered online to get a 1TB phone as the stores only carry up to 256 gigs, nothing bigger. But I went to the store to get 2 more lines upgraded so that I can use up the eGC. So if you need a phone bigger than 256 gig, online is the only option.

So far so good all 4 years, I just came back today with a 13 Pro with $450 eGC and a 13 ProMax with $500 eGC. Note the eGC was sent via email literally 2 minutes after they rung me up for the taxes for the phone at the register. Since this was not my first year buying from Walmart in order to preserve my grandfathered non unlimited plan, I played it smart like last year. I waited for the first phone's eGC to arrive and then proceeded to use the first eGC to pay down the balance due on the 2nd phone. Then at the end of the day I only have to worry about 1 eGC to use up and not deal with multiple ones.

Walmart is the only retailer I know that won't touch your non-unlimited plan and get your phones upgraded without changing service plans. Sorry you had trouble this year, did anybody tell you exactly why they could not upgrade your phone lines? You had mentioned you also had 5 ATT reps trying to assist in addition to the Walmart cell phone kiosk reps.

Just got back from Walmart after not being able to buy it online. I was able to get an Iphone 13 Pro for $899 plus tax and they had to activate it at the store. As soon as I got home, $450 gift card was waiting for me in my inbox.

They did have to call AT&T fraud dept to verify that my information was correct and such. It wasn't bad as I thought. And this only works if they have the phone in stock. They are not able to order any other phone if they don't have the one you want in stock. I had to get a new service with them since I wasn't with AT&T.

I was able to pay $599 down plus tax as someone already mentioned 66% payment in store and when I got home, I just paid off the rest and now the phone is paid off. I'll try to unlock to device after 24 to 48 hours and see if that goes through.

If they unlock your phone in the next few days, you are the exception. Usually you get an email saying you have not met the 60 days of service yet.

Keep us updated!

Thanks!
