I already have all seasons of Frasier on DVD, and had long ago painstakingly ripped all episodes and saved them on my Plex server. The series never used to be on sale for years. Then last year it went on sale for $50. I figured I'll buy the iTunes copy as well. That way I'll have a digital copy without having to rely on my Plex server.

And so I went ahead and purchased it. But almost instantly I 'returned' the purchase and requested a refund. And that's because the quality of the episodes was horrendous. Yes, of course it's SD, but the videos were compressed just too much. Every scene had large amount of macro-blocking/posterization over any dark part of the image. Clear sign that the bit rate was too low. When I loaded up my own rips the difference in quality was huge.

Also, even though the last 2 seasons of Frasier were shot in HD, this digital set has those in SD only. They could have included at least those in HD. The only saving grace is that those seasons were widescreen (albeit SD only). On my DVD set they are regular letterboxed 4:3.

At $30, I would recommend buying it. It's a great TV show. One of the few long running shows with consistent quality all through. Just be aware of the image quality of the content. Granted, one doesn't watch a sitcom like Frasier for its visual glory. But it does bear mentioning that they did a horrible job digitizing it.

Unfortunately, this series will most probably never be converted to HD. Cost of conversion is too high for this series (it'll need to be re-edited from tape). So this is as good as it's gonna get. Might as well buy it at this price.

Edit: seems I'm wrong about the series not being converted to HD. Just saw that Amazon has the blu-ray set for $125. Must've released recently. Given that there is a blu-ray set, HD digital can't be far behind. I would just hold out for the HD version.

Also Community for $50. Lowest it's been since 2020 … not sure $20/$30 is ever coming back for that one, but I guess I'll keep waiting.

Thank you for this. This information leaves me torn. I too have the DVDs and the picture quality gives me pause. The only reason I would buy it is so that I can watch it easily from the road. But, if it's going to bug me every time I watch it, that's a bad idea. Do you think the defects will be noticeable on a smaller screen, say an iPad?

Why Schitt's creek is SD? Pretty sure they have shot it on HD! Or just SD version on sale?

Thanks for that and for saving me the trouble. I did the same with DVD rips and Plex, and was wondering whether it was worth jumping in on a digital copy. I had the exact question when I saw the listing - 'could they possibly have included the HD seasons in SD?!'. That's just pathetic.

My wife and I have been talking about buying the Frasier box set. Based on your comparison, I presume you'd still recommend people buy the DVD set over the iTunes set assuming prices are somewhat comparable?

Anybody have a pointer to a good deal on the DVD set?

I doubt you'll be able to tell much on most scenes, and even less on an iPad due to the small screen. Typical bright scenes look okay. Just that scenes with dark background, for example the radio station studio scenes always have dark curtains in the background just behind Frasier. Those curtains just look like a blocky mess.

If you look at iTunes, it is available for the sale price for both HD and SD.

I doubt DVD sets will be this cheap. I was looking up Amazon for you and the DVD set is $67 (which is a deal in itself. I bought it over 10 years ago for $150 or $180 or something).

But while looking it up I realized Frasier is now on Blu-ray! Which was a surprise. That's $125. But I would get that instead if you had a blu-ray player.

That being said the current $30 SD deal is not bad. That's the lowest it's been.

I see it's not MA compatible, but is it still possible to stream these instead of downloading? Really want Fraiser but having to download episodes I want to watch will be cumbersome

Can be streamed. The way they title these is getting a bit archaic saying download vs streaming.

No TV shows are Movies Anywhere (MA). That's just for movies.

You can stream these via the Apple TV app on various devices that it's available for (although not all). I think you'll need download and install iTunes to stream on a PC.
