Any suggestions for a CPU cooler for this, can a standard air-cooler one be applied.

Not quite the helpful reply. I do use many computers to render 3d animation, my last was built pre-pandemic, Ryzen 3900x which came with a cooler, WHICH I totally appreciated. I am NOT a gamer, and the computers I build are more GPU intensive. I do not want to overclock. There are a million choices out there and I would not mind the simplest that would sufficiently do the job. Of all the many I have built (I am no expert but they work) I have always used air coolers, I think the last several were Hyper 212 cooler. It looks like that would not do the job in this case. I do understand this CPU runs hotter that is why I ask.

You want the most powerful CPU cooler you can afford. Maybe even consider custom water cooling with at least 420mm radiator. 13900k is notorious for throttling even with the best air coolers, and virtually every AIO. Not necessarily a bad thing, as that is how Raptor Lake is designed. It will just automatically overclock itself until it reaches 95C, so the sky is almost the limit in terms of cooling, power consumption, and performance.

360mm AIOs still cause the 13900K to throttle. You have an answer now. Custom Loop or under volt this.

Look at the Noctua NH-D15 if you can fit it in your case. Puget Systems is using the little brother to this cooler in their systems with this CPU.

I am using Thermalright FC140, 13900K can turbo to 5.6GHz.

My suggestion would be not to compromise on cooling. It is the single biggest factor affecting your computers performance.

It's a hot cpu but it can be managed with a solid cooler. I'm running a fractal s36+ and it's keeping it cool enough under load to avoid throttling.

Get a high end cooler and some decent compound and you'll be fine.

Tomshardware already did a study on this: https://www.tomshardware.com/feat...ing-tested

Honestly, if you're going for top tier CPU, you really should do top tier cooling and not leave performance on the table. I currently have NHD15 on mine and it struggles a bit as it's definitely alot louder trying to keep the 13900K cool while encoding/compiling vs the 12900K I had previously which was much easier to cool. OTOH, you could decrease the power limit to 125 watts and have it run cool and quiet even with a cheap air cooler, but you're going to leave up to 25% multicore performance on the table

So is the consensus 13700k does well with D15, 13900 needs more?

I'm looking to upgrade a 3900x and 10850k. Already got a 13600k which has been a dream, looking at the 700k and 900k for the i9 replacement. Mostly high-core VMs and productivity tasks. Is it worth getting the 900k with a D15 and undervolting or limiting a bit? Or just max out a 700k.

Have them in Fractal Torrents so tons of airflow, but am basically forced to do air coolers.
