The Squier line has really improved over the last few years and for ~30% discount on one of their higher end model, it's not a bad deal
If you like the look of say a Les Paul or Paul Reed Smith, the Korean and Chinese brands are making good guitars.
Satin or matte finish paint look great but will polish where your hand arm rubs the body and will create an unattractive finish
Flat fret boards are better for playing lead. Rounded fret boards are less common but make it easier to play bar cords
Look for locking turners. Grover is a good brand. The tuners on my Fender were also good.
Tuning: tune string, then bend the string at the fifth fret 1 or 2x and tune again if now out of tune.
Bone nut better than plastic. The nut is the white bar near the head that holds the string spacing. Lubricate them with graphite.
$200-300 range brands, might have lower quality control imperfections

Once you receive your guitar:
Check the selector switch to hear each pickup
Check volume and tone pots (potentiometers) for shorts, static or inconsistency by playing an open note or chord and turning the knob thru its range.
Feel / check for sharp fret ends on both sides of the neck that catch fingers. Sharp edges can be filed down.
Check fret height with a straight edge, or play notes up and down the neck to check for strings buzzing on tall frets
Test neck flatness by holding both the 1st and 15th frets, and then press the 9th to check gap, zero gap is ideal.
Is the fret board face comfortable or does it make a sharp edge with the side.
lubricate the fret board face (rosewood) with lemon oil
