In the past, Kohls and Macys gift card deals at HEB are usually 'buy $100 gift card, get $20 free HEB gift card'. This year, they offer $20 off - which is a better deal (20% vs 17% off).
They also have this deal for ulta, pappas restaurants and Kirklands... limit 1 per heb account... great deal
Also $20 of $100 on Express, Nordstrom, and Adidas gift cards. I just came back from HEB store and can confirm it is just $20 off $100 gift card with no additional purchase required. And you can pay at self-checkout too.

did the self check out attendant stare at you to make sure that you were using your own CC and didnt have a handful of CC to try, like they are supposed to watch.

No. I was first standing at the end of the long line for cahier checkout because I did not know if I could do self-checkout on gift cards. Then an employee came to me telling me that I could use self-checkout even I was buying gift cards. She said someone will ask to see my ID. When I went to self-checkout, no one asked me to show my ID even after I flagged the
attendant for help because I did not understand when I saw the big screen displayed 'continue at the terminal'. The attendant showed me that I needed to press the green button displayed on the small screen on the terminal where you swipe your credit card. The green button has word 'agree' or 'yes' or something like that after some fraud warning paragraph that is hard to read on a small screen. After that the big screen just totaled and asked me to pay. The attendant never asked me for ID nor she watched me paying.

does this mean that in addition to the $100 GC you have to buy at least $20 of groceries or will the $20 comes off the cost of the $100 GC directly?
this pairs up with the 5 x Select Small Kitchen Appliances + $15 Kohls Cash for $25

My basket only has $100 GCs, now discount me $20 = $80 total
