Why not just go with a man Xbox one s or x with a built in 4K player? This seems pricey.

You'd be referring to value and Rob doesn't want anything to do with such a concept.
Lol says the guy that says object based soundtracks "hardly has any value" and still invest in it! đŸ¤£

Honest question. How does this player provide better video/audio quality when all signals are digital and it's your TV that processes video and your receiver - audio. It are you referring to the old analogue outputs?

Better tone mapping, Dolby Vision for discs, HDR optimizer, a lot quieter

The 420 supports HDR10+ which is what your Samsung TV has. The 820 supports HDR10+ AND Dolby Vision which is on most higher end LG and Sony TVs. So you can save some money now and get the 420 unless you plan to upgrade to a TV with Dolby Vision in the near future.
If you don't mind me asking since it sounds like you know this stuff... I've got a high end LG (65cxpua) and a Sony ultra blu-ray which does engage HDR when I play a movie... Would this step the video up another notch? $400 worthy?

I finally bit the bullet for this deal. I got an open box and used a $15 credit to make this big expense easier to swallow at $352.

So besides Xbox series X not yet supporting DV for Blue-Ray discs there's no difference. Got you.

Well you eluded to it in your tv comment.
In basic terms it's how the signals are processed, especially true when it comes to HDR.

Just like you understand there are different qualities with tv processing on the signal it receives, same holds true here.

Comparing a game console to this player is not a good one.
Since game consoles do not process/pass DV with disc. You should be comparing it to the 420 model.
It's basically the same player without DV.

I always wonder why people would think something designed to play games but will also play movie discs will perform as well as a dedicated player with all 3 formats!

If you play games completely understand the value of the compromise.
