Difference is, they're wildly power inefficient in comparison, and the new Intel CPUs are at the very end of their lifespan, so you'll likely have to buy a new mobo and other parts next year if you want to stick with Intel. So it's weighing whether you want to have that or jump to the new gen. Personally speaking, if I'm going to spend that much on upgrading, I may as well go all in.

Only real downside atm is that the new AMD mobos are still rather expensive, and the 3D V-Cache versions are reportedly going to be introduced at CES in early January, so you'll want to weigh what will be greater gaming performance and other factors if you buy one of these.

I'm on R5 3600 right now. What's the best value right now that can work on my MB? R7 5800?
5700x/5800x for value.

5900x for productivity.

5800x3d for purely gaming performance.

I'm starting to feel like these chips had such a high MSRP so they could slash prices for the holidays and we are seeing the actual prices now.
I am not doing my new build for at least 10 months, I am just ignore all CPU and GPU deals right now. Gonna ride my Ryzen 3600, 2070 Super until she start smoking!

Aren't these cpus slower than new intels and you need a new mobo and ram.

While 13 gen is backwards compatible with existing mobo and ddr4/5 ram…

I'm sure Ryzen is good but AMD lost my business with Bulldozer, went Intel after that and never looked back.
So did i... but u do know supporting the competition pushes the tech faster and lower prices?

Yeah but nobody actually lives near a Micro Center. Very regional and I kinda wish they'd stop posting deals "in store" when they don't have that many stores across the US

Nope. But every review I've seen says the 13th gen is better. That's why 7000 Ryzens already dropped in price. They're outgunned for price too.

Like Lamborghini vs Ferrari… They're both phenomenal chips this year.

I'm not saying that Ryzen is bad, by no means, just for the money 13th gen makes sense, unless you're building from scratch, and have to buy as mobo and ram anyways.

This was in response to someone saying these are slower than Intel - I am saying the Intel CPUs aren't as efficient as AMD.

That's fair. I think it's important to consider Intel 11th gen where they got trounced by AMD. 12th and 13th gen are still less efficient than AMD but for most users that won't be as impactful as 11th gen was. How many hours per day are we maxing these things out? I'm on a 12600k, I play Overwatch at 1080p. It's great, it's not a space heater at all and I wouldn't trade it for a 5800x3d because I'd have to give up Quick Sync.
I'm glad it's a difficult choice now.

For gamers, Intel's 13th gen has better cost per frame in games (ref: Hardware Unboxed). There are some productivity workloads where 7900x comes out at top, but if you need all the cores you can get, you might as well upgrade to the 7950x.

If it wasn't for intel, I don't think we'd see nearly as much drop in price. Yay competition!

EDIT: See Hardware Unboxed latest video on how these price cuts have made AMD much more competitive with Intel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5X0RuduRdU

AMD for the most part aren't as competitive this gen w/ the current offerings they have for sale so the price discounts was necessary from a viability standpoint. I believe the discounted prices of their current gen lineup will hold once AMD announces the 'big guns' aka the '3D Cache' models at CES this coming Jan.

If you have a microcenter near you it's $473 for the 7900X and they'll throw in 32GB of DDR5 6000 (about $170 value). Putting the price around $300 for this CPU.
