HSU Research has their 12" VTF-2 MKS subwoofer for $639 + $100 shipping [hsuresearch.com]. Was in the market for some home theater subwoofers and found this.

EDIT: Price is now $10 lower than when I posted it. This now beats the FP deal from 5 months ago by $10.

Probably more than I want to spend for subwoofers, but thought somebody else might find it useful.

I wish I had two of these instead of one PB16. Alas, no do-overs.

Worth mentioning that other models are on sale as well. HSU is a great brand. Just be aware that return shipping -- if you decide you don't like the sub -- is all on you.

Can you elaborate why? I'm looking for a new sub and was considering the PB16 or a HSU VTF-15H

To smaller subs will give better (more even) sound then one big one, the PB16 is a monster so it's hard to locate, the two smaller HSU might make decent speaker stands, I don't need all the fancy SVS software since I have a minidsp and dirac, and the PB16 is frankly just totally overpowered for me. My most-excellent JBL 708P speakers run out of steam long before the PB16 does.

To be clear, other than size, there's nothing but awesome performance from the PB16.

Now, if I just didn't care about price, I might go for 3-4 SB16s. They can be tucked away, and SVS does have amazingly low distortion and amazingly flat response. They do, I think, make the best subs for anything but massive theaters. Just not the best value unless you need their doodads.

Solid Deal Still rocking an ancient HSU STF-1 (been relocated to bedroom duty now that I have a PSA TV18) in the living room. This is indeed a great value sub, but Id also recommend checking out Monoprice Monolith and also Power Sound Audio (PSA) models, though both those are likely to be a bit more $$$ (but you get a lot more sub as well).

If I'm just looking for a low maintenance sub and don't want to mess with Q dials and closing ports, would you recommend a monolith 12" versus this?

15x17 carpeted man cave primarily for movies. 7.2.2 with Klipsch Sub-12HGs currently.

Thanks for the response. I have an older MX350THX that I was looking at pairing up with a newer sub and eventually swapping out the MX350THX so both subs match.

Id think this sub would outperform the Mono 12", but the Mono 15 or 16" would surely outperform this sub (but the cost of the mono is more). Either would be low maint subs that you could "set and forget" once you dial them in initially (Leave all ports open).

Seems reasonable. Might be better off just biting the bullet now, though, and getting two of something new. It's real work to integrate mismatched subs.

Pretty good if you need ported. If you want sealed check out the Starke Sound sale.
