Some movies are ad free. 8 bit Christmas for example
I've read in the past that Apple has had a lot of trouble with promotional type deals with their payments. So there's a chance that the next month will charge you $9.99 instead. Fortunately I was able to contact Apple, and while they were unable to resolve the actual promotional issue (they suggested I contact HBO directly), I had them cancel the subscription and refund the $1.99. It would save the hassle if I was charged $9.99 next month. I figured creating a new account and subscribing through HBOMax directly would be less of a hassle.
And the other thing to consider is that 4K content is only through the $15.99 Ad-Free plan.

Good to hear that they're still not inserting ads on HBO legacy programming. It's the best of the back catalogue and most of the really great stuff. $2 to binge HoTD ad-free is a compelling offer if you didn't watch it.

That's different from the value proposition of paying $2 to enjoy one of the biggest, if not the biggest TV event series of 2022. TV is or is becoming like movies. There will be a few pricey good blockbusters and a few "other" cheaper movies people will want to watch any given year, with the general audience all watching the blockbusters while fragmenting more on the cheaper movies (Oscar-bait, action, comedy, horror, etc.).
Personally, I think HBO should have adapted Dunk and Egg buddy comedy--although no dragons or CGI wonders, a lot of castles and fight scenes. Or a time jump and pay for an exceptional screenplay writer who might be able to replicate GRRM's talents at plot and characterization. Ronald D. Moore and Lindelof-level, although not sure either of them could pull it off. It's hard because exceptional writers are rare and not always consistent. GRRM wrote a ton, for example, and his only truly exceptional works are ASOIAF and D&E towards the end of his career, with both likely to be unfinished.

So speaking for myself, and as mentioned by another member - I would think if you want to have 3 months of the subscription you'd need to manually cancel after third charge, otherwise the subscription will auto-renew at the current monthly rate they have listed.

Predator had no ads at all, but the Matrix movies all had ads. (I checked parts of them all)
