Okay, I signed up and got approved. Here to clear up confusion.

Currently Target has 3 card programs:
1. RedCard Credit Card (Mastercard)
2. RedCard Debit Card (not a debit card in traditional sense, more like a charge card/store card with an authorization from you to EFT from your bank account elsewhere)
3. RedCard Reloadable (a demand deposit account by Pathward, National Association, Member FDIC, don't worry about the word demand, remove it and you're left with "deposit account," in other words a checking account or, at the very least, a cash management account)

Many Slickdealers in this thread posted confusion of why they demand SSN, why do they want to know your occupation, why do they need to know the expected deposit amount. Some wondered why they got rejected when they have 800+ credit score. And this is why. Target Reloadable is a banking product. Not credit, not store card. The partner bank, Pathward, is required by law to obtain these sensitive information from you. And this also explains why you can get rejected when you have 800+ credit score. One person on this thread reported being approved even when his/her credit file is locked. And rightly so, because again this is not a credit product. Pathward does not check your credit. It however may check your deposit account history against popular verification services like ChexSystems. So check on that if you got denied. Did you open too many bank accounts in the past few months?

Target Reloadable is basically a banking product, no different from any other fintech like SoFi, Chime, etc. It offers a full-fledged Visa debit card that can be used anywhere, even internationally. It will give you an account number along with a routing number, and a direct deposit service. It has main account, and you can create sub accounts to manage your money. You can even add goals to set aside money for vacation, presents, and other projects. You can do a mobile deposit via its Mobile Check Capture service. There's ATM service. There's Bill Pay service. It has its own mobile app where you can manage all of your financial needs. And lastly, you can even request fund from another RedCard Reloadable customer!

So as you can see, this is not your typical store card anymore. I hope this helps. No more confusions!

Edit: So I just learned that Target used to have a similar program called REDbird, a direct competitor to Walmart's Bluebird. However, the REDbird program got killed for good in 2018. So I guess this is a resurrection. The Target Reloadable!

Don't have either card and just signed up for the reloadable. Account approved. Now what?

BTW, there's a lot of exclusions.

RedCard $40 offer: Get a coupon for $40 off a qualifying purchase over $40 when you are approved for a debit or credit RedCard in-stores and at Target.com between 10/30/22 - 12/10/22. The coupon will be mailed to approved cardholders with their RedCard and will be valid through 1/09/23. Excludes alcohol, Apple products, Barbie camper and houses, Beats Fit Pro, Beats Flex, Beats Powerbeats Pro, Beats Studio Buds, Bose, Bratz Collector and Designer Dolls, Bullseye's Playground, Cards Against Humanity, Casper, clinic & pharmacy, Cricut, dairy milk, DockATot, Dockers, Do-a-Dot, DSLR cameras & lenses, Dyson, Elf on the Shelf, face masks (Dolan, Sanctuary & Sugar Fix brands), Fisher Price Laugh n Learn, Fitbit, Funko Standard Pop, gift cards, GilletteLabs Heated Razor Starter Kit by Gillette – 3ct, Google, Hair Appliances, HALO Baby, Hasbro Games (Classic Monopoly, Connect Four, Jenga, Sorry, Trouble), Healthy Roots Dolls, Hot Wheels Ultimate Garage, Honest Baby, HP Inc., Infant Optics, Instant Pot, JBL, LEGO, Levi's Red Label, LG OLED and QNED TVs, limited-time designer partnerships, Luvable Friends, Mega Bloks, Meta Oculus and Portal, mobile contracts, Motrin, Ninja, Nintendo hardware and Switch games, Polder, Peg Perego, Philips Avent, Plan B, power shave, power dental, prepaid cards, Play-Doh Ice Cream Truck Playset, PlayStation consoles and accessories, Revival, Samsung TVs, Shark, simplehuman, Sonos, Sony Electronics, Take Action, Target Optical, Tempur-Sealy, Trading Cards, Tylenol pain relief, Tylenol PM, Ulta Beauty at Target Brands, Unlocked phones, Vera Bradley handbags, Weber, and What Do You Meme? game.

For all the idiots saying you can reload the card with a credit card are just that.
You CANNOT load this with a credit card nor another debit card or any other form of payment besides cash.

It's not a matter of paranoia. SSN's are the most misused and abused identifier, probably in history. It was literally only meant to be used for keeping up with your work history, but got adopted as the default personal identifier by businesses who have no business having it.

I know I've handed it out to car dealers, directv, dentists, etc over the years and probably will continue to, but your SSN being misused can cause serious problems.

It's all fun and games until you have to fight the credit bureaus over fraudulent credit history or when you hit 62/67 and go to start drawing SS or disability and find out someone else has been using your identity for twenty years. Then you have to prove you are who you say you are at 65, oh and you suffered a house fire so you don't have a copy of your birth certificate (from a state/county on the other side of the country).

Does it happen to everyone, no. Is it rare? Also no. Best case, you're going to lose hours upon hours of time sitting at your nearest social security office.
BTW, you do NOT have to give your SSN to dentist or medical places. They ask because, like you said, it's a default identifier, but they have no right to require it. I always ignore that spot on such forms and have had no problems.
Oh and do not give anyone "only the last 4'' of your social. That's a new trick the internet provider tried, and it is still identifying you.

I went through the process of establishing a red debit account, and it will ask that you provide a SSN at the end of the application, if you read the fine print (even though the money will be coming out of your own account and not a CC) it states they "may" check your credit worthiness to ensure you are who you say you are ( to verify your personal banking info when signing up for the debit) also for future marketing offers (soft pulls) and when they deem "necessary ". Then I said meh, don't need it that bad.

I like language that is clear and concise, either you WILL do a hard pull, or you WONT. Simple as that. The vagueness in some of these types of applications are what's catching people off guard. Read the fine print, always.

For those of you with an online account with a Redcard credit card, did you login to you account first before applying? Or did you create a new account. It's giving me the option to do either. Creating a new account would most likely require another email address? TY in advance.

So just to confirm, the only way to reload this card is at B&M store using Cash, correct?

Target was one of the first large companies to compromise all of their customer's data. Have avoided giving them any data beyond my credit card and a shipping address. And like most major companies they do extremely invasive data collection, to the point where they could know you are pregnant before you know yourself.

This is a tempting offer but not worth the risk.
I remember the pregnant girl target story. However isn't Amazon worse where they have bought roomba and will now store your house layout and furniture so they can recommend house goods and replacements?

For those of you who have target credit card and Debit, there is now a 3rd option, you can now sign up for a reloadable card and get the $40 off $40 coupon. When you get the coupon you can technically use it once online and once in store so that would be $40 off $40 2 times which is $80 bucks at target.

Thanks for posting that!

No, it doesn't, but it only took me a minute to sign up. It's possible I may get it. I didn't read any exclusions for not getting the $40 if you already have a card, so I signed up.
I have a red card. I got the reloadable and received a coupon in the mail with the card.

For what it's worth, the reloadable card terms said they wouldn't check my credit score. And, yet, they still denied my application. Have no clue why...

I have both Red Card credit card and debit card. I signed up for this with no problem.

Once you signed up, you download the Red Card Reloadable app and go to Target to deposit money. Not sure if that is necessary to get the coupon but I doubt it. The coupon is the same one from other offers and you can use it on just about 95 percent of the items at Target.
From the fine print I just read—it seems to me more like you *CAN'T* use it on 95% of their products…

Just curious, why would anyone waste a hard pull on store credit card when you can get a debit card without any damage to your credit or wasting a hard pull?

I already got the debit card. So, I have all 3 three cards from Target. Hope they send the $40 coupon...

Technically, they don't need to check your credit 'cause they're NOT lending you A SINGLE PENNY.

This is basically a reloadable debit card. U can ONLY use it if there is MONEY (which u load) in there.
