I took a flyer on this knife a few years ago after Cook's Illustrated raved about it and they were right -- it runs circles around my very expensive German bread knife, thanks to a great quality blade and a very wide-set wavy serrated pattern. Who cares if it doesn't match my other knives? I use it almost every day.
Excellent knife. If you are considering, just stop now and buy it.
Great present also for cooks and chefs.
Use zero pressure when slicing, almost zero crumbs with bread, clean cuts.
Watch your fingers!

Agreed!
My fingers quake in terror every time I grab this knife.
I regularly bake big, 1 kilo rustic batards with a very crisp crust and a soft, airy interior. Most bread knives would mutilate a loaf like that but this Mercer cuts through it like butter -- even thin slices.
This knife will literally slice through anything, but I would never recommend a serrated knife for slicing meat.
For that, your best tool is a sharp slicing knife, or a versatile larger well-sharpened chefs knife. Mercer has excellent value-priced versions of both. If you don't have a good chefs knife, I recommend starting with the Mercer Renaissance 8" chefs knife. [EDIT: See below. I got the names wrong. I recommend the Genesis over the Renaissance]

I'm sorry I always forget their product names (which one is which). The Rennaissance is their line that is designed like traditional German forged knives with exposed rivets. The Genesis 8"[amazon.com] is the one I'd probably recommend. It's a little cheaper and has a modern "grippier" handle. They are otherwise the exact same knife. Same full-tang blade, same steel, same balance. You can find it occasionally for under $35.
I love the reviews on these knives. They are filled with people who almost immediately caused severe lacerations and had to get stitches. Scroll through the photos for the bloody and bandaged hands.
I've got two of these. They are excellent for briskets and pork tenderloins in addition to breads.
I'm honestly more cautious around these than a loaded gun. A drop on to a bare foot will be a significant hospital visit. You should probably not allow children access to this knife. My wife doesn't even like to use it and makes me put it away.
