this seems like an excellent idea, but what is the difference between this and just gluing a extra hook/loop reel to the side of your desk?

If these are the same ties they give you with their cables (which it looks like they are), they don't hold up well to repeated wrapping/unwrapping.

I have this on my nightstand. It's... fine, but not great. I find I really have to push the wraps onto the soft tray firmly to get them to stick, and when I don't, any jostling will leave the cord laying on the ground.

Alternately, I have a magnetic one similar to this from Anker in my car that works very well. And while more expensive, I'd rather spend $5 more to alleviate the frustration of fishing around the floor of my nightstand in the dark looking for the proper cord for my phone.

I'm sure they all wear out eventually, but in my experience the Velcro brand wraps last much longer.
