Good deal, but not letting me check out? "There was a problem. An error has occurred while attempting to process your order. Please try again or check back later.". Guess I'll try again later....

Be careful with H&R Block and TaxAct. They were sending tax return data to Meta and Google.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/22/popular-tax-prep-software-sent-financial-information-to-meta-report.... [cnbc.com]

the software sent information like names, email addresses, income information and refund amounts to Meta

Just to confirm, checkout is still showing 5% back for everyone, right? They don't show the 20% back during checkout?

Question - it says one personal state program included and is valued at $40
Does this mean I need to buy an additional $40 program when doing a second user's state tax (of the same state) plus an additional efile fee? Thanks in advance

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank 3asym0ni3s9862936

Remember H&R Block does not support form 8911 - Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

So if you bought a new Electric Vehicle or a Plug in Hybrid and installed a charger at home, H&R Block is not your best choice.

Do yourself a favor and never buy this garbage software from H&R block. Tried it last year after years on TurboTax. Had a miscalculation, ended up having to pay additional state taxes and I have yet to hear back from them on their "software error guarantee". Now don't get me wrong, I hate both of these companies for lobbying to keep the tax code so complicated. But this software is an abomination and don't get me started on their nickel and diming upcharges for states and e-file. Recommendation: AVOID at any cost.

I have been using HR block for years, works fine for me.

Not sure about your tax situation/complexity, but may be you had a user error..

Deluxe+State PC download is not shown as available by Amazon, just the mail-in code. I assume it is to prevent you using digital credits. For some reason Mac downloads are still available.

I used to use TT and they nickle and dimed me just as much. I switched to H&R Block ~7 years or so and haven't looked back. Exact same nickle and diming, but the upfront cost is a lot less. Just know what edition you need beforehand (same goes for TT), in-app upgrades are a rip off with both. And as far as state e-filing is concerned, last time I checked it was an extra charge for both H&R and TT (unless you file in a select number of states like NY where law prohibits this). Other than that, I've never had any issues with either, the few times where I something was wrong it turned out to be me entering a value in the wrong place. Happened to me both with TT and H&R though.

So, while I despise their lobbying that keeps the IRS from just sending you a pre-filled out tax return (which they easily could, they already have 99% of the data), this is no better or worse than TT in my opinion. Software has bugs, that's just a fact of life.

What many people don't understand about a flat tax rate is many people will pay more, especially low income and many in the middle class. People are also used to deductions for their children, mortgage payments, contributions to 401-K and cafeteria plans…
Your point is well understood, yet flat tax beats the current system.
Cafeteria plans, 509 plans, and even 401K is another huge waste of productive time (US staffed call centers, systems to maintain it, documentation and "education" materials, etc).
Nobody thinks of low income. This is all an illusion created by the politicians to get re-elected. Canceling any of this is a political suicide, so nobody will ever do it, flat tax included.

Exactly - our current tax code is used as a welfare program. Flat tax would be an actual "fair" tax but that argument is only used for political slogans about rich paying their "fair share". I've googled what my fair share should be, but I found nothing - because there's no such thing without a flat tax.
Define fair. There's not a single definition. I like to keep things simple when discussing things like this. For example... pick a single government program, say road maintenance and two people who both drive 15,000 miles per year. Person 1 earns $25,000 per year. Person 2 earns $2.5 million per year.

What is fair?

1) Flat tax. Everyone pays $1000 per year. This is 4% of person 1's income. It's a nit for person 2.

2) Flat tax rate. Everyone pays 2%. Person 1 pays $500. Person 2 pays $50,000.

3) Progressive tax rate. Under $50,000 per year pays 1%, 50k to $1m pays 2%. Above $1m pays 3%. So, Person 1 pays $250. Person 2 pays $75,000.

I can make a case for any or all of these being fair (or unfair).

None of this would change the fact that a flat tax is still a much higher burden on you the less you earn. The more you earn, the less of a burden it is. If you earn $1000 a month, then say 5% (or $50) is going to be a much, much bigger burden on you trying to juggle groceries with housing on only $950 left. On the other hand, if you earn $1,000,000,000 then 5% is only $50,000,000 in taxes, leaving you with "only" $950,000,000. I'm going to guess you'll have to choose between turkey and stuffing with the "little" you have left.
