Good deal, but not letting me check out? "There was a problem. An error has occurred while attempting to process your order. Please try again or check back later.". Guess I'll try again later....

Be careful with H&R Block and TaxAct. They were sending tax return data to Meta and Google.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/22/popular-tax-prep-software-sent-financial-information-to-meta-report.... [cnbc.com]

the software sent information like names, email addresses, income information and refund amounts to Meta

What makes this deal better is if you have a Amazon Prime Visa card and use it to pay, instead of getting the usual 5% back in rewards, you get 20% back in rewards. Plus, if you have accumulated no-rush shipping credits, you can use these to pay for the download versions. So if either of these apply to you, this deal is better. Whether you have the key code in physical form or online doesn't really matter, you just type it in to the program once after installing it.
Yes, none of the scenarios that you listed apply to me for Amazon. Do you get the code somehow separately from Amazon if you were to select he digital/download option?

After you place the order you can download the software and view or copy/paste the key code in the order details in your Amazon account. They do not email it to you.

Question - it says one personal state program included and is valued at $40
Does this mean I need to buy an additional $40 program when doing a second user's state tax (of the same state) plus an additional efile fee? Thanks in advance
No, you can use the state program as many times as you need to, once you've downloaded it. But the State return has a separate efile fee for every state return efiled. You can print out your state return and mail it in without a fee.

It's only if you need to download a second state that you have to pay a separate $40 fee.

I like being able to import everything from year before.

Hate that HR Block got caught sending user financials to Facebook.

Facebook and Twitter need to be history.

can this deal be web only? I don't like installing local if I don't have to

Web only versions are very limited and do less than the download or CD versions yet cost more. Web versions were also the ones that sent data to Meta. If an amended return is needed, you will have to pay again with the web version while installed will let you file amended returns. I see absolutely no upsides to web only and highly recommend installed versions for price, features and security.

I saw it mentioned that HR Block says they have now gotten rid of the pixels that were mining the data. Hopefully this is true. Either way, I'm taking my chances with HR Block this year instead of some other product.

Good deal. I bought last year for pretty much same price on some day. It usually gets cheaper at some point but I don't feel like being on the lookout forever. Ive been waiting for Amazon to have a sale on this as I have accumulated quite a few no rush credits. Was able to get premium for free this time around.

I'll say that when I saw the report that H&R Block shared any information with FB, I went absolutely ballistic. Of all the types of companies that should never ever share info with FB and be absolutely proactive sure, it's a tax processing company.

Exactly. But that's what @gergev is suggesting. Very similar to what we use in the US right now, marginally easier to calculate, but with a lot of nasty weird unexpected side effects that are going to p*** people off for sure.
Yes, you're right. I misspoke. It is a progressive tax when lower income taxpayers have a lower tax rate, just as we do now.

But I think 'flat' tax also implies, just pay the tax rate and get rid off everything else to keep it simple.

No deductions, write offs, different tax rates for capital gains, loss carry over, etc.

A flat tax where everyone has the same percentage would disproportionately hurt the lower income. So a modified 'flat' tax, or call it something else, where below a certain income there is no tax and there would be (progressive) brackets based on income. Perhaps keep a dependent deduction, but get rid of all other adjustments to income.

The goal, you can do your return on a postcard.

for H&R block, it's just the online versions that had the pixels right? trying to get more details.

When you say no deductions. write offs or adjustments, do you mean we just tax gross income? That would not work and would be a very unfair system. Everybody sems to think of income tax only applying to payroll workers. It is simple for them and some system like that could be done I guess but millions earn income in vastly different ways. Write offs, deductions and adjustment to that income are the only way to calculate the true income. The tax code is always going to be complex as it has to account for all these things. It is not going to fit on a postcard and even if it does there will still have to be tons of supporting documents of some sort that the IRS must have access to. Tax return calculate your taxes they are not a bill that is just paid. One thing I would like to see gone is tax credits, many take money from the treasury even when paying no taxes and much of it is fraud and abuse. Multiple people can and do right off the same child and get away with it year after year. we had a year where 96 million in child tax credits was sent to one single address in Atlanta and 64 million to another. I saw the IRS testify that set no flags in their system. All that money is taken from other people that may be struggling with their own finances

FYSA, despite the MacOS version only saying it's compatible with "Mac OS Big Sur 11, Mac OS Monterey 12, Mac OS Catalina 10.15", it installed, activated, and seems to be working fine on Mojave (10.14).
