It's not junk depending on what you need. For us Turbotax deluxe* is very easy to use with our particular Schedule C business and easily imports our brokerage account information. I tried H&R block one year and I could not get it to properly calculate our business tax credits even after opening a support ticket.
Also - an FYI for those that used TaxAct, H&R Block or TaxSlayer online services in previous years: There is a good chance they secretly sent data about you to Meta\Facebook: https://arstechnica.com/tech-poli...with-meta/
*In previous years there were some abilities you'd get with the physical disk that weren't included in the download copy. I haven't looked this year to see if that is still the case or not
Cause Intuit, maker of TurboTax, and other tax prep software companies have paid off Congress to make sure they don't allow this to happen. It's been contemplated for years and years.
According to TurboTax, one needs Home&Business to report Rental Income. Does Deluxe or Premier help you to do Schedule E, which is where most people report rental income.
Desktop Deluxe 2021 included schedule E, I don't use it so I can't comment how much "help" it would provide but the worksheet and form is there.
I just confirmed with Amazon Chat rep and they said "Disc version seal not broken is eligible for return through Jan 31st 2023. Digital download is NOT eligible for returns."
Last year I returned Home & Business... it had "FREE Returns". They tried to screw me and not give me a proper refund. Yes, it was sealed and unopened.
Don't forget promo code citi2022 if paying with a citi card. You will have to select the physical version. The code is good for $15 off for many items.
Didn't work for me with my citi Double Cash card nor my citi Costco card.

I get TT Premier free from Fidelity each year. I almost always forget and then remember just as I am going to buy this. I think you need to have a managed account and/or 7 figures with them. Not sure the exact requirements. But for those who qualify it is a nice bonus.
No fee for application itself
No fee for Fed File
Cheaper State File (14.99 vs 29.95)
Same User friendly website with same deductions
Deluxe Upgrade is 7.99 vs 49.99+
Look if you want to say it is cheaper, then say it.
This will be the first year that I have significant capital losses. Will Deluxe be able to handle this or should I wait for Premier? TurboTax's website of course suggests premier.
It should. You can only deduct $3,000 in capital loses. So if you have more than that, suggestion is to sell any investments with capital gains to offset if you need to. Otherwise you can carry the loss forward for 2 or 3 years. It's not unlimited like corporations can. Remember short term capital gains and loses are netted together and LONG TERM capital gains and loses are netted together separately.
And disclaimer due to my license: always consult a tax accountant or lawyer for advice.

Are you sure, I don't recall that. The online version is different from the CD/download versions. I remember one year, a common form (Sched.C?) wasn't included in the Deluxe but after an uproar they added it back in to an update. Memory is fuzzy, though.
Yeah that did happen a couple of years back and they did add that feature back for Deluxe versions (I was specifically affected by this omission and then change). And there was at least one year where certain forms were not available for the download version vs the CD version.

Isnt premier the one to use if you have brokerage/investment accounts?

Does Deluxe provide the same direct download from brokerages that Premier does? That's the key thing I need. Premier was always sold as "better for investments". If the brokerage d/l is the same, how is Premier better for Investments? Does Intuit mean "Real Estate Investments"?
This is only from my experience but Deluxe has been able to pull in my stock/bond/treasury investments from my brokerage account and handle both foreign and domestic tax situations. Yes it prompts me to upgrade to Premier before doing so but if I just ignore that it works just fine. I do not have real estate investments though. I did get Premier once and found it made no meaningful difference for me

How does the IRS know? They have no clue what I owe, especially now requiring 1099 for everyone who sent $600 or more. They honestly just take your word for it and maybe audit you later
They know. If you get any tax documents from an employer or investment firm, those companies are legally required to send the IRS the government version of the form. The only exception is if you have non covered investments that are like 10 or 15+ years old. The law didn't grandfather prior investments to help companies out a bit.
They'd rather hire 87,000 new armed IRS agents to scrutinize every anamoly on peoples' returns that don't match to the dollar or within their "expected" range so they can audit more of us and charge penalties and late fees? Not to mention tax attorney fees because defending yourself is a risky proposition.
Next phase, digital dollar, so they know every taxable transaction you make and whether you pay it.
Cant see from under the brim of that red MAGA hat.
i've been using TurboTax for years but looking for different product for next year. Does anyone know why TurboTax is twice expensive compare to H&R Block? Seem like they both are very similar

Thanks, the 15 off code didn't work, but I was able to use the remainder of the previous 30% off offer by using 1 cent in points with my citi double cash.

This deal is for $35, so that's a little better, but .. if they stick to the same pricing as last year, you can wait a bit.
