I would go for STRDH790 or above models. This one is STRDH590, which is a base model with no Atmos support.

For this price, I do not see any other deal at this time for someone looking to buy a basic but quality "5 channel" Receiver. I guess it's too much to expect atmos at this price, unless there is another deal ongoing. Model:STRDH790 is $100 more for those who need atmos

I'm looking for a basic receiver. Even 5.1 would be good. Anyone see less expensive Cyber Monday deals yet?

Have you guys considered buying used?
People upgrading usually sell there older AVR's and often are a higher tier quality than these entry level newer model.
Just make sure they have the features you need.

Agreed 100%. I was able to score a Onkyo 7.2 receiver with Atmos support that was in mint condition for $200 off eBay. Receivers unlike most things are usually well maintained given once it's setup, it is not touched until it is moved or replaced.

I moved into a house that has 5 built-in speakers in the basement and a Jack for the sub. I assume there's no way for me to get Atmos with those speakers, so I might as well get this, right?

You'd have to add speaker wire and run them from where your receiver is to where you'll place Atmos speakers. Otherwise Atmos isn't valuable in your setup.

It depending on the layout but it's not the most optimal way of getting Atmos.

It will cost more,(ie more speakers, higher priced receiver) aesthetic difference etc and in the end it may not add enough sound performance for the money & hassle IMO.

You would only need 5 channels, buying used will cost you much less than this.

I get Atmos is the latest & greatest but it's built on top the core setup(5.1) so ideally you build up from a good core setup.
There is nothing wrong with a 5.1 setup and TBH a good one can out perform these entry or alternative Atmos setups IMO.

I would suggest buying a used receiver and give it a shot. If it sounds good to you just enjoy.
