Hi,
Just to be clear, Lego has announced that they would discontinue this set.
But personally, I have this set for my kids and they love it.

Although Robot Inventor is being discontinued, the LEGO Education version, SPIKE Prime, is not. If LEGO stops updating the Robot Inventor app, you will still be able to use the SPIKE Prime app to program your Robot Inventor hub. SPIKE Prime should continue to be supported for many more years as it is used in schools and for FIRST LEGO League. The previous system, MINDSTORMS EV3, was supported for 9 years.

This is good, but I already picked it up last week at Kohls when they were doing $15 KC for every $50 spent. I had a bunch of KC and earned a bunch of KC. The KC was worth much more than the LEGO VIP points!

My kids love their set, we've had a lot of fun with it it's legit educational. I'm glad to hear SPIKE Prime will keep him alive.

So if they stop updating the App, does that mean the App is totally unusable?

No, it just might eventually not be compatible with newer operating systems or computers. The EV3 Lab software for example, isn't compatible with newer versions of macOS.
