These comments…they exist and have existed for a reason. They are the solution, not a pointless alternative.

You can select the fan noise or white noise that will fit you and your scenario best. They get really soft and really loud. They don't loop audio files, they generate the sound continuously. They are low power and cheap (I've had mine 9 years now and I got it for $40 back then).
Huh?? Getting too defensive about others comments, I would suggest stay off the internet playground.

In an air purifier you can also select the fan noise to go really soft and really loud.
There is no audio file to loop in an air purifier. There are cheap air purifiers too.

Think of a white noise generator machine as an air purifier without the filters!!

People who anyway need or may benefit from air purification can definitely consider the air purifiers as a viable white noise source. I know because it has worked for me.

This thing isn't white noise though. Synthetic white noise it's an oxymoron

No audio files means you're stuck with exactly one fan sound and you just have to hope it's a sound you like.

We have 3 of these. They used to be the best, and they're still great, except they are a bit high-pitched for my preference. There are other pink noise machines, that admittedly cost a good bit more, than produce a far better sound. Namely, this thing is incredible: https://a.co/d/7gfe9uN

These things go on sale way less than you'd think. They are pretty top tier for white noise machines, so if you like white noise you should try while it's on sale. Returning is easy enough.

I've been using this for over 3 years. Helps a lot after working night shift. It blocks outside noice and helps me sleep better. No loops and lots of different sounds to choose from

BTW, any Marpac or Dohm or Sleep Mate owners out there who might be having problems with their machine, sometimes it just needs opening up and cleaning and/or possibly lubricating. Unlike the Lectrofan, these machines actually have an electric motor which spins a wheel around inside with fins that generate the white noise, exactly like a fan does which is used for cooling. Even tho the machine doesn't move air into and out of it, everything inside the plastic housing does get dusty over time.

I'm no expert and if you searched for ways of cleaning it you might get better ideas than I have, but using compressed air to blow out the dust and maybe some WD-40 to lubricate the moving parts might eliminate any rattling sounds or squealing or any other issues you might have. I've read a few people have threw theirs in the trash and bought a new one when just a good cleaning could have given several more years of life.

I have the travel micro lectrofan. It's fantastic for the go, paid $20 on woot at some point. Its pretty inpressive, I just ordered one of these for my bedroom, I assume it will be even better then the little micro.

Yep. I had to tighten the fan inside of mine. That was on the cheaper marpac. The more expensive one hasn't had that issue though
