serious question: do people really often sharpen chainsaw blades? I've just replace them in the past and they aren't terribly expensive.
Yes. Typically every tank or two you put through the saw. Running with a dull saw is much slower and is a good way to blow out the engine on your saw. Even if your chain is only $20, sharpening it once more than pays for the files. That said, they make really good 2 in 1 sharpeners which are more beginner friendly and faster than this.
I sharpen mine by hand and it takes probably about 10 minutes each time and It's a relaxing time for me while taking a break from sawing. A good chain can be sharpened by hand quite a few times and it definitely saves money opposed to buying a new one every time it gets dull.
