I'm not too sure of what headset to recommend because I use earbuds 90% of the time. When I do use a headset, I just have some wireless Turtle Beaches and use the V-Moda BoomPro mic with it. Here's a link to a few different mic tests so you can hear for yourself if you want.

This one looks better and cheaper
It actually doesn't seem to be an issue since they use two mics on both sides to beam form. The sound quality of the mice is pretty meh, but external sound isn't too big of a problem.

Overall sound and bass is pretty solid. Better then anything else I've used at this price point. Cushioning on the ears is ok. Thick enough that my ears are not noticably rubbing up against the inside. Not blow me away soft and plushy or anything, but soft enough I don't see getting uncomfortable the longer i wear it like the other cheap headsets I've tried. Cushioning on a head band is similar.
Build quality feels surprisingly solid. A tad heavy overall imo, and a little tight with the suction on my fairly normal sized head. The kid seems not to mind though, and ended up chatting is discord with his gaming buddies with no complaints using the plug in mic.
All in all thumbs up and i don't think you can realistically expect to be getting any better for $21 shipped. Perfect for what i was after for the kid. For myself I'd probably spend a little more and get a pair of budget friendly sub-$50 pair of JLabs on one of their endless buy direct sales (their $20-$25 Go Pop earbuds are by far my favorites for that type. Great quality for the budget price)
