Made from ABS plastic - more prone to cracking that those made from polycarbonate.

The way luggage gets damaged on flights, neither ABS nor polycarb will survive long. We have come to consider a suitcase to last a full long distance round trip and are happy if it has a second one at the end. Over the past 5 years, there has been at least one suitcase per round trip that was damaged (and even replacements were damaged the following trip). Heck, they even broke a Rimowa frame and those are supposed to really last... we've now gone to cheap and replace (sad b/c that's not how we want to fly, but it's a fact of air travel these days).

I hope they reimbursed you something at least for Rimova.

Not enough for the price of a new one - so, we decided to go with cheap stuff and just put luggage belts around and hope for the best... When they damage the cheap stuff, we just ask for a replacement (usually it's about the same quality.
Nowadays, the damaged luggage price is pretty much built in to the price of long distance tickets...

When you find the case is damaged while claiming the baggage, who should you turn to? The airline office close to the baggage claiming zone?

usually each airline has their own agents at the baggage claim area (both when you travel domestically and pick up at the end and internationally when you pick up for customs and then for final pick up).
If you don't see anyone at the claims carousel, you can ask the next airport person or even flight personnel (pilot, flight attendants, etc.).

Thanks for the info. I guess domestic is no problem, but international destination may not have office of foreign airline at that arrival area or baggage claim (some only at departure area).
