The Mac would be better *except* for those who are not in the Apple ecosystem, or are just accustomed to Windows, or who own Windows software or games, or otherwise need it for work, or... probably most people 😅

No. It's RAM is soldered. So not upgradeable.

If you need a Windows laptop, the Gram is a great option.
This would not be a good fit as it doesn't have a discrete gpu.

There's a lot to unpack in this comment. First you start by stating that you will get better hardware, longer life, and a smoother experience with a mac. So far I agree. Then you make the point about cost not being equivalent which in this case is sort of true as the gram is $85 less than the least expensive air. But that's still in the ballpark. I would argue at every price point Apple hardware compares favorably to the alternatives in the ways you mentioned. I think that's what's most important to most people. I've gifted or helped to set up Apple computers for several of my heretofore windows using (older) relatives and after a brief adjustment period they were happily doing the things that they had previously done on their windows machine. None of them want to go back. I guess we disagree on what constitutes "most people". I think most people want to browse the web, consume some streaming services, check email, etc. I would argue all of these experiences are similar on windows and Mac machines. Therefore you might as well go for the machine with the better hardware, which is longer lasting and gives you a smoother experience. The worst thing about switching back and forth is how copy and paste have different keyboard shortcuts. It really f$&@s with my muscle memory.
