I'd get this. I sent two kids off to college with Grams, and ones who aren't particularly kind to their hardware. They're practically bulletproof, extremely lightweight and the performance is outstanding. Combine that with the extended Costco warranty and you can't go wrong. Honestly, not sure what you'd need the extra performance for, aside from some heavier duty gaming.
After defending @contractcooker in an earlier reply, I'll respectfully disagree on this point - Even if you get better hardware, longer life, and a smoother experience with a Mac, and even if the cost were equivalent (which it typically isn't), it doesn't mean that a Mac is a better option for "most people."
The Mac would be better *except* for those who are not in the Apple ecosystem, or are just accustomed to Windows, or who own Windows software or games, or otherwise need it for work, or... probably most people 😅
That's the thing about the gram. It doesn't feel premium because it uses magnesium alloy to keep the weight down. It flexes like plastic but don't let that deceive you. It is as strong as any metal. So it depends on what matters to you. Lightweight even though it is perceived as a cheaper build quality but it's not at all or heavy aluminum with no flex.

Where is the IdeaPad deal ?
I got it 2 day before bf, retail price was 1k something. There was a lenovo coupon to get the price down to 600ish, I used id.me for student discount($32) and an extra lenovo coupon for $25 and urlhasbeenblocked refer gave me $40 + 8% cashback($48) which brought the total price to 510 after taxes

Having trouble deciding between this and the Lenovo. I'm not concerned that it's $100 more...just want the better computer long-term. Any informed opinions would be appreciated!

Heavier and "3-Cell 45WHr Lithium-Polymer Battery"

I would opt for the bigger battery in the lighter laptop

Would this be any good for gaming?
You want to by a gaming laptop if you see yourself getting into gaming. They have dedicated graphics cards (this one doesn't).

Dual SSD, 2.51lb weight. Excellent deal! I have a non-touch version with 11th gen Intel CPU, with only one thunderbolt port. Jump on it!

Dual ssd? Does it have an empty pcie 4 slot?

The sticking point for me with Grams is the memory expandability. They often have soldered RAM. According to a support rep I spoke with, no 2022 models have expandable RAM, but I have not been able to verify this. Of those models which *appear* to be expandable, the max seems like 24GB.

Similar but notably different. The Gram is lighter, has a bigger screen that is touchscreen, 4GB more memory, and a *possibly* slightly slower processor. One is not better than the other, just different. Different enough to have two different customers. I'm not sure I can make use of the extra processing power (if it's there), but the Gram's lighter weight with a bigger screen that also has touch sounds nice to me. Also, the ASUS fans are notoriously loud, and I'd trust the build quality of the Gram over the ASUS deal. The only thing about the Asus that makes me want to lean that way is the OLED screen. To each their own though.
true but keep in mind ASUS fan noise can be controlled using the app (three options includes whisper mode). ASUS has one slot for memory upgrade from 4GB to 32GB (single stick). In my experience touch screens have no use on windows (unless you have a specific use case). ASUS screen is too good to pass (both laptops available in-store). Every windows laptop makes fan noise when you push them in performance mode (no two ways about it). End of the day YMMV Smilie

Terrific deal at this price. for a portable ultrabook this ticks all the boxes. I have a feeling if with recessionary economy ahead. we will continue to see great deals. Raptor lake and Zen 4 are also coming up but That will take at least 2 quarters before we see anywhere close to this.

No laptop over $500 should be 16:9 or 1080p in the year 2022

They're both great choices. Price and performance favors IdeaPad. I think the Ryzen is overall a better processor, GPU and more efficient, while Intel a little faster single core.

If everything else is equal, I'd go with IdeaPad. If price is the same, I'd go with Gram.

And I just spotted this other LG to add to the mix.

This was posted by Suryasis regarding that LG you posted:

Check the official spec and you will find that the display for this laptop is abysmally bad for the price. It is a 250-nits display with 45% NTSC or around 55%-60% sRGB color gamut. At this price, almost all manufacturers now offer a 300-nits 100% sRGB 1080p or 1200P panel and some even a 2.2K panel.

The one in this thread is good, but too bad it is a Touch and 12th gen. I read that the 12th gen heats up more, therefore battery isn't as good vs the 11th gen. Add in the Touch and it lessens the battery even more.

Is this a more useful laptop than the Surface Pro 9 at Costco? Same ram size but this one has double the SSD size.

Does it have fingerprint reader ? How is the key travel?
No fingerprint reader but the IR cam is great. From opening the lid to being signed into Win 11 , about 10 seconds total time. I think key travel is satisfying, you can feel the click and the keyboard feels solid. Under load, you can feel some heat from the middle of the keyboard but kind of rare. Last thing I'll note while on keyboard, the numpad on the right is a bit smaller than a full size numpad. It doesn't bother me since I use it sparingly but if someone is using this as a daily driver and needs that numpad, it could be frustrating.

Thanks for the heads up on the deal. It's replacing x1 carbon touch. Excited to get a number pad never had one on a laptop before and after traveling for work realized it comes in handy.
