As far as I'm aware, that has to be one of the best deals for a new HD 800 S. Even on ebay used it's hard to find them anywhere below that price.
This should be front page.

Do not even consider getting the 820. You've been warned. 800S only. Yes, you will need a amp and dac, but people buying these headphones probably already know this.

I wouldn't say that they are better or worse than planar headphones...they are just different. This model is largely popular for how good and wide its soundstage is. As to my understanding, the "HD" doesn't mean anything in specific. It is just a model name and a continuation from previous models like their HD 600 or HD 650, etc.

After two previous pairs of open back Sennheiser headphones, I don't think I want to do another. At the end of the day I just like a good closed back for some bass, or a pair of good speakers. Seems like a really good deal though for the right person.

This $1800 Sennheiser HD800S doesn't allow you to hear secrets of the universe but my $6000 Hifiman Susvaras do. Jokes aside, great price on the HD800S, best gaming headphones you can get for sure due to the soundstage. Secrets of the universe no, footsteps in an FPS, YES!
