As far as I'm aware, that has to be one of the best deals for a new HD 800 S. Even on ebay used it's hard to find them anywhere below that price.
This should be front page.

Sponsored as in the retailer (Adorama) has a deal with Slickdeals to advertise the sale. Whether that means Slickdeals gets a fee up front or a percentage of whatever, it is higher up in "deals" so that it gets more clicks. In this case, you can only get the special pricing through this deal link which presumably gives Slickdeals credit for the sale.

This is seriously tempting me to upgrade, but my Sennheiser HD 650s are still such an amazing set of headphones that I'm hesitant to retire them just yet.

Anyone else in the same situation?
Me too.. I have a hd 650 from 2015 which still feels as good as new and a hd598 from 2014 tat still sounds fine. Im seriously tempted to upgrade, but I have over 8 headphones ( Audio technica , vmoda, bose and sony ) and all those earphones and wat not.. plz for the sake of god, someone gift me this. My brain says its alot of money, but I also think I can skip eating out for a year if it came to it.

For whoever is wondering, do NOT get the HD 820. Terrible ratings, and not well regarded in the audiophile community.

https://crinacle.com/rankings/headphones/ - The 820 is in the "E" ratings.

Any dac/amp recommendations that pair well with these?
I can suggest a Schiit Jotunheim. I've had the 800S headphones for about 5 years. I paired them with this dac/amp and it has been fantastic. Adding the dac module to the Jotunheim amp gives great sound processing and plenty of power to drive the headphones. It has a balanced output too which adds awesome separation and detail. I've converted my HD600's and HD598's to balanced connections because of how impressive the change was on my HD800S.

I would not get rid of any headphones to replace the HD800S with. If you are buying the HD 800 S you are buying them for what they do best. They are not the same sound signature, driver or tuning as Sennheiers other models. They are a great headphone but not a replacement or upgrade for your HD 600/650. The 600's have their own sound

For 99+% of the population, you'll hit the point of diminishing returns a few hundred/thousand dollars back.
Going from a $10 set of cans to a decent one at $200-$300 is probably about the limit of what most of us can discern as an "improved" sound quality. Anything after that in my opinion is just not worth getting into.
At the super high end level, placebo is one helluva drug.

Do not even consider getting the 820. You've been warned. 800S only. Yes, you will need a amp and dac, but people buying these headphones probably already know this.
New to serious headphones. Please advise a decent amp and dac to pair with the 800 s. What about source of the music? Will an iPhone playing Apple Music be good enough?

For audio electronics like amps and DACs, yes. But these HD800S is a very solid step-up from <$500 headphones, a different ballgame.

I will start from ditching iPhone playing Apple Music as a source.

I have had the HD 800S for a few years now, paired them with the Woo Audio WA8 amplifier/DAC.

For movies, orchestra, acoustic, vocals, these are hard to beat. May not be the best for rock or hip hop, but for audiophile stuff, and orchestra again, none compare.

Exceptional for gaming and movies as well. Although I don't use them for gaming as I don't want to put in that many hours and wear out the tubes in the amp and the earpads/head band of the headphone.
Yea that's not how headphones work. Quality does not diminish from number of hours used. If you spend that much on audio gear use it as much as possible.

I used to be Senn-Head but since 2017 I have been using the Sony Z7 almost exclusively for serious listening. More people should try the Z1R and Z7MK2 out instead of defaulting to the more popular brand.

Just try googling Sennheiser HD 800S amp dac reddit and I'm sure you'll find a bunch. The Schiit Modi/Magni combo is mentioned. You can listen to compressed music from Spotify, but your source is important as well... I think Qobuz usually has high-fidelity files, but their selection is kinda meh compared to Tidal. Tidal has had some scandals with claiming lossless format/high fidelity when it actually is not... I'm sure Apple music has lossless files, but I've never used it so I can't answer that.
