I thumb'd up this deal, but found some useful "cons"

Cons:

1) According to one reviewer, this thing is super heavy. So if you run out of power home, no chance you'll be using it as regular kick scooter home rest of the way. Probably have to lock it up and drive back for it lol.

2) One Amazon reviewer said if a wheel goes flat, there's no way to change a tube. You have to order a new wheel from Razor for $50.

Bad. SLA batteries are the same tech as your car battery. Heavy and really not meant for EV apications

I can't believe they have lead acid in this day and age.

this is the weaker of the SLA models they offer.

not that great of a deal
I honestly have no idea if this is a good deal or a bad deal, but unless there is a better model for a similar price what can you expect? If you know of a better product near this price point please enlighten us.

Doesn't have to be at the same price point. SLA is a real pita. It loses charge more than lith when in storage. It has to be constantly maintained. It degrades more than lith no matter what you do even if you faithfully maintain it. It's also heavy. It also can only be discharged to around 50-60% or it will die even faster. It can not be charged as quickly as lith and so you will wait a long time for it to float up to 100% or you will ride with it charged less than 100%.

There's too many cons here.

There's a place for SLA, I use it for other stationary less stressful things. There is No Way I would want it for powering a moving vehicle just like I wouldn't want it for powering a lawn mower.

They are similar tech, Not the same. They are closer to a deep cycle we use in boats and rv's. Yes they are lead batteries but have thicker plates along with other differences that let them discharge much farther than your cars starter battery. If taken care of and kept charged after use you should get a few of good years out of them.

They will probably last 2-3 years. You don't know what you are talking about on the "EV' application part though. They are just heavier. Deep cycle lead acid batteries have been used in golf carts for decades. The benefit is that they are readily available and cheap. A good lithium battery is good for about 5-7 years.... cheap ones are only good for 1-2 years and are stupid expensive to replace. I know this because I converted a couple of Razors to lithium 36v. I used generic multi-cell lithium batteries that cost $135 each shipped from China. New, I could get 21mph and 7 miles of range with pneumatic tires. In less than a year they were down to 17 mph and 2 miles of range. SLA also isn't the same tech as your car battery. Same general principal in chemical reaction but they are sealed batteries and not simple wet bath lead acid.

Nice thing about this scooter is that it is brushless. It should have a lot of instant get up and go.

Not speaking about the Razor specifically, but I have an old Bladez scooter that was similar and SLA. Batteries lasted a good long time under light use, and when one finally tanked, I was able to replace them with drop in lithium replacements off of amazon. Miady was the brand - they seemed to have them in all the "standard" SLA sizes and one matched up. Was easy enough to unscrew the battery area and pull the old ones. You do have to have a standard level of "car battery knowledge" I'd say, but I bet there are youtube videos and as long as you don't do something sillly like drop a screwdriver across the terminals, it's was a fairly minimal thing for me to undo some spade connectors and connect them up to the new batteries. It did require a different charger (SLA has a different charging curve), but that was easy to find on ebay (about ~$30), as easy as searching "24v lifepo4 charger" and just making sure it was low enough amps and a high enough terminal voltage that was within the specs for the batteries listed on Amazon. Most of them are labeled "e-scooter" and the like.

So, not impossible, and now I have a much lighter, lithium scooter with longer range and slightly more speed. Something to think about - just run the SLA's into the ground and replace with lithium when the time comes! Of course, you know, don't attempt if you're not mechanically minded and do so at your own risk, yadda yadda yadda. I'm just saying you're not stuck with SLA and there are upgrade avenues down the road. Maybe more advice if you've already bought one... if you've not bought yet, obviously go lithium from the start! Smilie

I have this and had no problem kicking it back home as long as you don't live near a hill! I would say 1) It is heavy and 2) battery life doesn't last as long in winter. I got this for $129 for an old slickdeal so I do not complain at all.

It makes sense it's an sla... The weight of it coupled with capacity is pretty spot on with sla...

I'd skip this. The razor hover 1 is a better deal. Half the weight, higher weight capacity, similar performance.

Heavy, less range, prob need to stay fully charged for battery to last longer
If you look up the parts page, it's a 5AH @12v battery (x3) that weighs just under 4 lbs ea

If you wanted, you could but a drop-in lithium ion replacement battery that have built in controllers to emulate lead-acids and save 2/3 on weight

But all of this talk about lead acid batteries being a stone age technology that we're supposed to avoid like the plague and a no-brainer deal killer are hard for me to understand. From a design standpoint, for this application, lead acid batteries seem like a reasonable engineering and cost solution . Not sure about the less range observation, but interested in what that's based on
